Strength Seen in Humana (HUM): Can Its 11.6% Jump Turn into More Strength?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Humana (HUM - Free Report) shares soared 11.6% in the last trading session to close at $431.87. The move was backed by solid volume with far more shares changing hands than in a normal session. This compares to the stock's 3.4% loss over the past four weeks.

Humana stock witnessed a price rise, driven by strength in its Medicare footprint. As of June 30, 2026, the company served 17.9 million medical members, up 20.7% year over year. Individual Medicare Advantage membership increased 23.4% to 6.5 million, while total Medicare membership rose 35.3% to 11.1 million. Its broad membership base, extensive provider networks and longstanding Medicare expertise support market penetration and care coordination capabilities.

Humana's CenterWell platform further strengthens its competitive position by integrating pharmacy, primary care and home health services. During the first half of 2026, CenterWell's external revenues rose 32.2% to $3 billion, supported by 65.7% growth in primary care revenues to $1.6 billion. The company's value-based care model covered approximately 4.1 million individual Medicare Advantage members at June 30, 2026, supporting coordinated care, improved patient outcomes and medical cost management.

This health insurer is expected to post quarterly loss of $1.04 per share in its upcoming report, which represents a year-over-year change of -132.1%. Revenues are expected to be $40.46 billion, up 23.9% from the year-ago quarter.

While earnings and revenue growth expectations are important in evaluating the potential strength in a stock, empirical research shows a strong correlation between trends in earnings estimate revisions and near-term stock price movements.

For Humana, the consensus EPS estimate for the quarter has been revised 2.7% lower over the last 30 days to the current level. And a negative trend in earnings estimate revisions doesn't usually translate into price appreciation. So, make sure to keep an eye on HUM going forward to see if this recent jump can turn into more strength down the road.
