Quantum Builds ActiveScale Momentum: Can It Sustain Growth?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • ActiveScale and tape storage solutions are driving customer wins and larger deals exceeding $3 million.
  • A major European biometrics renewal and an APAC hyperscaler deal worth well over $80 million highlight demand.
  • QMCO's revenue rose 26% to $80.8 million, but disk drive and tape component shortages threaten growth.

Quantum Corporation’s (QMCO - Free Report) ActiveScale object storage platform is poised to benefit from the growing demand for scalable, durable and cost-efficient data infrastructure. As enterprises generate more data from AI, high-performance computing, scientific research, media production, and surveillance, managing large datasets is becoming a critical technology challenge.

Quantum's ActiveScale platform is designed for large-scale object storage, helping organizations preserve and access substantial amounts of unstructured data. ActiveScale is gaining traction not only through new customer wins but also through larger deployments by existing customers. During the fiscal first quarter, QMCO saw a sharp increase in deals worth more than $1 million, with most exceeding $3 million. ActiveScale combined with tape remains a cornerstone of its portfolio, driving customer wins.

The company secured a major renewal and expansion with a leading European biometrics institution, reflecting continued demand for ActiveScale’s resilience, performance and power efficiency. QMCO also won a hyperscaler deployment in APAC worth well over $80 million, centered on its Scalar i7 tape library, whose high density and power efficiency helped secure the deal. Revenue rose 26% year over year to $80.8 million, up 4% sequentially and above guidance, driven by strong demand for ActiveScale and tape storage solutions.

Despite the promising opportunities, several risks could derail ActiveScale's momentum from producing sustained growth. Quantum has acknowledged that shortages of disk drives and tape components have restricted its ability to fulfill demand. A growing backlog is encouraging, but orders generate revenue only when it can deliver products. Moreover, it competes with enterprise storage providers and cloud-based alternatives such as International Business Machines (IBM - Free Report) and NetApp (NTAP - Free Report) . Pricing pressure, technological advances and changing customer preferences could affect margins and market share.

QMCO Faces a Tough Fight in the Evolving Storage Market

IBM is building its AI strategy around hybrid deployment, data governance, observability and trust. Watsonx Orchestrate is well-positioned as a control plane for building and running AI agents securely across clouds and on-premises environments. Bob is intended to broaden developer adoption of IBM's AI platform, while Concert provides a unified view of health, security, compliance and operations. The multi-year, $240 million Together AI agreement adds NVIDIA HGX B300 systems to IBM Cloud for high-performance AI inference. These tools align with enterprise requirements where data control and governance are critical and support management's focus on productivity-led margin expansion.

NetApp is benefiting from higher enterprise spending on AI-ready storage, with all-flash, Public Cloud and Keystone demand broadening across customer types. NetApp is positioning its unified data platform to activate enterprise data for AI without requiring data movement. It recorded more than 1,100 AI and data preparation wins in fiscal 2026 compared with roughly 400 in the prior year. In the fiscal first quarter, it added about 350 AI and data lake modernization deals, with management noting larger deal sizes as prior pilots moved into production. DataPelago adds in-place data processing capabilities, while AFX and the AI Data Engine target high-performance AI workloads and governed data access.
