Zacks Initiates Coverage of IHT With Neutral Recommendation

Read MoreHide Full Article

Zacks Investment Research initiated coverage of InnSuites Hospitality Trust (IHT - Free Report) with a “Neutral” recommendation. The company’s improving hotel occupancy, completed property renovations and potential strategic transactions offer opportunities for long-term growth. However, persistent operating losses, liquidity pressures and uncertainties surrounding its diversification initiatives warrant a cautious outlook.

Headquartered in Phoenix, AZ, InnSuites operates two hotels in Arizona and New Mexico, comprising 270 suites. The company also maintains interests in independent hotel reservation services and clean energy technology, providing potential avenues for expansion beyond its traditional hospitality operations.

Improving hotel operations remain a key positive. In the first six months of fiscal 2027, combined occupancy increased to 83.42% from 80.96% a year earlier. Revenue per available room rose to $79.66 from $78.48, while room revenues increased to $3.89 million from $3.85 million. The operating loss narrowed to $7,300 from $16,304, reflecting improving efficiency. Hotel revenues reached a record of $4.5 million for the first seven months of fiscal 2027.

Completed renovations at both properties could further strengthen the operating performance by supporting occupancy and reducing maintenance requirements. Meanwhile, potential hotel asset sales or refinancing could unlock value beyond depreciated book values. Management is also exploring merger or reverse-merger opportunities to strengthen capitalization and expand the company's financial profile.

The research report highlights several key factors that could drive InnSuites' growth. IHT's involvement with IBC Hotels offers an asset-light growth opportunity through reservation, booking and branding services. Additionally, its investment in UniGen Power provides exposure to clean energy technology, although commercialization remains dependent on financing and successful prototype development.

Despite these opportunities, financial challenges remain significant. Cash declined to $246,555 as of July 31, 2026, from $350,200 as of Jan. 31, while operating activities consumed $147,043 during the first half of fiscal 2027. Although occupancy improved, average daily room rates declined 1.5%, indicating limited pricing power. Continued operating losses and reliance on external financing could constrain financial flexibility.

Further concerns stem from UniGen's developmental stage, concentrated hotel ownership and complex related-party arrangements. Prospective asset sales and strategic combinations remain uncertain, making their contribution to future shareholder value difficult to predict.

In terms of valuation, the stock is trading at a premium to its industry peers on certain metrics and above its historical median multiples. This indicates that investors may already be pricing in expectations of future growth and strategic value realization. Such elevated valuations could limit near-term upside, particularly given persistent operating losses, liquidity pressures and execution uncertainties.
