Factors at Play for WDC

WDC’s fiscal first-quarter performance is likely to have benefited from strong demand, improving long-term visibility and favorable pricing trends across its Cloud, Consumer and Client markets. The AI infrastructure boom continues to drive demand for data storage. As cloud providers expand data-center capacity and demand for high-capacity HDDs rises, Western Digital is well-positioned to benefit from the growing need for storage solutions.

Per management, its advanced technology and product roadmaps, coupled with strong operational execution, are enabling it to deliver more exabytes to customers without adding unit capacity. WDC is investing in head and media operations and automation to improve productivity. High-bandwidth drives are in sampling with five customers. Strong demand, disciplined supply management and expanding margins are expected to have supported earnings growth, robust free cash flow and long-term shareholder value in the to-be-reported quarter.

In the fiscal fourth quarter, WDC began shipping next-generation ePMR drives with capacities up to 40 terabytes and entered volume production with two customers. Management expects the ramp to continue over the next few quarters and the platform to represent about half of nearline bits by the third quarter of fiscal 2027, which should raise capacity delivered per unit and support lower cost per terabyte. UltraSMR is also ramping with a third major customer, and management expects the technology to account for about 60% of nearline exabyte shipments as fiscal 2027 ends. The next transition is 44-terabyte HAMR, which remains on track to ship in the first half of calendar 2027. Management said qualification feedback on capacity, performance and reliability has exceeded customer expectations, while 50-terabyte products are planned for the second half of calendar 2027.

Management sees the shift toward inference, agentic AI and physical AI as a long-term driver of storage demand, as these workloads continuously generate and retain data. Rising AI usage and increasingly data-intensive workflows are accelerating capacity needs. Western Digital noted that an autonomous-vehicle customer’s 2027 exabyte requirement has increased many-fold, highlighting the emerging opportunity. Management expects physical AI to drive growth in 2027 and beyond. It expects non-GAAP gross margin to be 55-56%. Non-GAAP operating expenses are expected to be $390-$400 million. Interest and other expenses are anticipated to be approximately $15 million.

WDC remains committed to returning free cash flow through dividends and repurchases. It completed the monetization of its remaining 1.7 million Sandisk (SNDK - Free Report) shares by exchanging them for 4.8 million Western Digital shares. At fiscal 2026 year-end, the company held about $1.6 billion in cash against $1.1 billion of debt, leaving a net cash position of roughly $500 million.

However, Western Digital’s growth depends on successfully ramping new storage technologies, including 40TB ePMR, 44TB HAMR and 50TB products, while expanding UltraSMR adoption. These transitions require timely qualification and manufacturing execution, and changes in product mix can affect exabyte growth. Delays, weaker adoption, competitive pricing pressure and flash-based alternatives could limit expected capacity gains and cost efficiencies.

Competition is also becoming intense, especially from HDD rivals like Seagate Technology Holdings plc (STX - Free Report) and other major storage players like Micron Technology (MU - Free Report) and SNDK.

Buy, Sell, or Hold WDC Stock Before Earnings?

Western Digital enters first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings with strong fundamentals, improving profitability and exposure to the expanding AI and cloud storage market. Its high-capacity HDD roadmap provides another potential growth catalyst, while substantial free cash flow strengthens the financial picture. Nevertheless, rising competition, cyclical storage pricing and potentially elevated investor expectations create risks that should not be ignored.

For investors, the decision to buy, sell, or hold WDC depends on the durability of AI-related storage demand, the company's ability to expand margins and the valuation investors are willing to pay for future growth. It is therefore advisable to hold the stock ahead of earnings to assess sustained revenue growth and margin expansion post-release.
