Key Takeaways

  • JBHT's Q3 earnings rose 3.4% to $1.82 per share, while revenues surged 20.4% to $3.68 billion.
  • Intermodal revenues grew 20% on 8% volume growth while brokerage returned to profitability on solid pricing.
  • J.B. Hunt's operating margin narrowed to 6.7% from 7.9% as higher driver, fuel and insurance costs weighed.

J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (JBHT - Free Report)  reported third-quarter 2026 earnings of $1.82 per share, up 3.4% from $1.76 a year ago. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.81 by 0.6%.

Operating revenues climbed 20.4% year over year to $3.68 billion and surpassed the consensus mark of $3.56 billion by 3.2%. Stronger pricing, an 8% increase in Intermodal loads and higher brokerage volumes supported growth. However, elevated driver-related expenses, fuel costs and insurance claims pressured profitability.

JBHT's Intermodal Revenues and Profit Rise

Intermodal revenues increased 20% year over year to $1.83 billion. Volume rose 8% year over year, with transcontinental loads advancing 1% and Eastern network loads growing 18%. Revenue per load increased 11% year over year to $3,121, while the metric excluding fuel surcharge revenues improved 2%.

Operating income climbed 18% year over year to $147.5 million. Improved network balance, operating efficiencies, lower container storage expenses and cost-to-serve initiatives supported profitability. Higher driver personnel costs, equipment expenses and insurance claims partially offset these benefits.

Management highlighted strong road-to-rail conversion demand, particularly in the Eastern network. However, driver availability constrained the company's ability to accommodate additional freight volumes during the quarter.

J.B. Hunt's Dedicated Earnings Face Cost Pressure

Dedicated Contract Services revenues rose 11% year over year to $960 million. Revenue per truck per week advanced 10% year over year to $5,732, while average truck count increased 1%. Productivity, excluding fuel surcharge revenues, improved 3%, supported by contracted price escalators and fewer idle tractors.

Operating income declined 22% year over year to $81.7 million. Higher driver expenses, group medical claims, insurance premiums, equipment costs and new-business onboarding expenses weighed on results. Customer retention remained approximately 96%.

The segment added 120 revenue-producing trucks sequentially and secured approximately 425 trucks through new deals during the quarter. Year-to-date new truck sales reached 970, approaching management's annual gross sales target of 1,000-1,200 trucks.

JBHT's Brokerage Business Returns to Profit

Integrated Capacity Solutions revenues surged 57% year over year to $434 million. Load volume increased 22% year over year, while revenue per load climbed 29% to $2,638, reflecting stronger contractual and transactional pricing. Contractual freight represented 63% of total loads and 58% of segment revenues.

The segment generated operating income of $9.6 million against a loss of $0.8 million a year earlier. Higher gross profit from improved pricing and volumes drove the turnaround, partially offset by increased personnel and insurance claims expenses.

Gross profit margin declined to 14.3% from 15.0% a year ago but improved from 12.5% in the preceding quarter. Management attributed the sequential improvement to disciplined pricing and efforts to restore targeted profitability.

J.B. Hunt's Truckload and Final Mile Results Diverge

Truckload revenues increased 37% year over year to $261 million. Revenue per load, excluding fuel surcharge revenues, advanced 29% year over year, while load volume grew 4%. Trailer turns improved 3%, reflecting better network balance and asset utilization.

Operating income slipped 6% year over year to $7 million as higher purchased transportation and equipment costs offset pricing gains. Management noted that aggressive repricing initially resulted in customer losses, although some business subsequently returned at improved rates.

Final Mile Services revenues declined 3% year over year to $200 million, primarily due to previously identified business losses. Stops fell 10% amid efforts to improve account quality and profitability.

Operating income plunged 76% year over year to $1.6 million. Lower revenues and higher purchased transportation expenses hurt results, partially offset by reduced personnel and facility rental costs.

JBHT's Operating Margin Narrows on Higher Costs

Companywide operating income increased 2% year over year to $247.1 million. However, operating margin contracted to 6.7% from 7.9% a year earlier as transportation, fuel and insurance-related expenses increased.

Rents and purchased transportation accounted for 47.8% of revenues compared with 43.6% a year ago. Fuel and fuel taxes increased to 7.1% from 5.4%, while salaries, wages and benefits declined to 23.8% from 26.9%.

Management identified more than $50 million in sequential operating income headwinds from driver investments, fuel volatility and claims-related expenses. Group medical costs alone accounted for more than $16 million of the increase.

J.B. Hunt's Debt Declines as Capital Returns Continue

Net cash provided by operating activities totaled $1.11 billion during the first nine months of 2026, compared with $1.29 billion a year earlier. Net capital expenditures declined to $291.1 million from $490.9 million.

Total debt stood at approximately $1.12 billion as of Sept. 30, down from $1.60 billion a year earlier. The company repurchased approximately 704,000 shares for $174 million during the quarter, leaving $619 million under its authorization.

Management continues to target approximately $700 million in capital expenditures for 2026, with spending expected to increase in the fourth quarter. The company also expects a full-year effective tax rate of approximately 24%.

Pricing improvements across Intermodal and Dedicated remain central to management's margin-recovery strategy heading into the 2027 bid season.
