Universal Insurance Holdings (UVE - Free Report) delivered adjusted earnings of $1.93 per share for the third quarter of 2026, which increased 41.9% year over year. Earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.34 by 44%.

Total revenues increased 9.6% year over year to $0.43 billion, surpassing the consensus estimate of $0.38 billion by 13.2%, based on rounded figures. The upside reflected improved underwriting results, higher net premiums earned and stronger investment income. Direct premiums written rose 2.7% to $608.9 million.

UVE Premium Growth Led by Markets Outside Florida

Direct premiums written in Florida declined 3.3% year over year to $414.4 million. The contraction in Universal's largest market partly offset the expansion across its broader geographic footprint.

Direct premiums written in other states climbed 18.5% to $194.5 million, reflecting continued growth outside Florida. Total policies in force advanced 7.9% to 953,611, while premiums in force increased 4.4% to $2.23 billion.

Universal Delivers Stronger Underwriting Results

The net loss ratio improved 560 basis points year over year to 64.6%. Management attributed the improvement primarily to a lower ceded premium ratio, reflecting changes in the company's reinsurance arrangements.

The net expense ratio deteriorated 20 basis points to 26.4%. Higher policy acquisition costs associated with growth outside Florida and increased operating expenses drove the deterioration, partly offset by a lower ceded premium ratio. The improvement in the loss ratio more than absorbed the expense pressure, bringing the net combined ratio down 540 basis points to 91%.

UVE Revenue Benefits From Higher Earned Premiums

Net premiums earned rose 12.1% year over year to $403.2 million, supported by higher direct premiums earned and a lower ceded premium ratio. Direct premiums earned increased 4.2% to $556.7 million, reflecting premium growth generated over the preceding 12 months.

The ceded premium ratio declined to 27.6% from 32.7% a year earlier, primarily reflecting Universal's new reinsurance program, which took effect on June 1, 2026. Core revenues, which exclude realized and unrealized investment movements, increased 11.1% to $444.3 million.

Universal Gains From Stronger Investment Income

Net investment income increased 17.1% year over year to $21.5 million from $18.3 million. Higher invested assets and stronger fixed-income reinvestment yields supported the improvement.

Commissions, policy fees and other revenues moved in the opposite direction, declining 10.8% to $19.6 million. The decrease primarily reflected the company's new reinsurance program. Total invested assets were $1.61 billion at quarter-end compared with $1.53 billion at the end of 2025.

UVE Expands Profitability on Underwriting Strength

Adjusted net income available to common stockholders climbed 43.9% year over year to $56.3 million. Management attributed the improvement primarily to stronger underwriting performance and higher net investment income.

Adjusted operating income surged 44.5% to $77.2 million. Adjusted operating income margin expanded 400 basis points to 17.4%, reflecting the lower net combined ratio. On a GAAP basis, operating income increased 32.8% to $72.2 million, while operating margin improved to 16.4% from 13.6%.

Universal Strengthens Book Value and Returns Capital

Book value per share increased 32.4% year over year to $23.37. Adjusted book value per share rose 38.2% to $25.90, while annualized adjusted return on common equity improved 170 basis points to 32.3%.

UVE repurchased approximately 174,000 shares for an aggregate $7.4 million during the quarter. About $1.1 million remained under its existing share repurchase authorization. The board also declared a quarterly cash dividend of 16 cents per share, paid on Aug. 7, 2026, to shareholders of record as of July 31.

Total stockholders' equity increased to $646 million from $551 million at the end of 2025. Cash and cash equivalents rose to $569.5 million from $408.9 million, strengthening the company's liquidity position.

Universal also reported that Hurricane Isaias made landfall in Florida after the quarter ended. Management said claims activity related to the storm had been less significant than initially anticipated, following the deployment of adjusters to affected communities.
