MercadoLibre, Inc. (MELI - Free Report) continues to strengthen its position in Latin America's e-commerce market, supported by expanding buyer engagement, competitive pricing, and logistics investments. Its growing marketplace scale and efforts to improve the shopping experience are helping the company attract customers and deepen its presence across key markets.

The momentum was evident in second-quarter 2026 results, with gross merchandise volume (GMV) rising 44% year over year to $21.9 billion, or 36% on an FX-neutral basis. Items sold increased 45%, while unique active buyers climbed 26% to 89.3 million. Items purchased per buyer grew 14%, reflecting stronger engagement.

Brazil remains a key growth engine. The lower free-shipping threshold continued to support demand, with FX-neutral GMV increasing 39% and items sold rising 56%. Conversion improved 1.1 percentage points year over year. MercadoLibre also introduced buyer discounts for PIX payments and reduced seller take rates in selected categories, improving price competitiveness and helping active sellers grow 29%.

Broader product availability and faster delivery further reinforce its competitive position. Cross-border trade GMV increased 60% on an FX-neutral basis, while same-day and next-day shipments rose 38% to 225 million.

However, weaker consumer demand in Mexico and Argentina presents challenges to maintaining growth momentum. MercadoLibre's ability to sustain engagement, competitive pricing and service improvements will remain important to expanding its marketplace leadership.

MELI’s Investment Case

MercadoLibre’s expanding marketplace presence, strong buyer engagement and integrated commerce-fintech ecosystem support its long-term growth potential. However, persistent margin pressures from strategic investments, softer consumer demand in key markets and a premium valuation remain concerns. Despite encouraging sales growth expectations, near-term earnings weakness and recent share-price underperformance suggest investors may prefer to remain cautious.

MELI currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
