GLW's Optical Sales Surge on AI Infrastructure Demand

Optical Communications remained Corning's largest growth engine, with sales climbing 44% year over year to $2.38 billion. Segment net income surged 80% to $532 million, reflecting strong demand and improved profitability.

Enterprise Networks revenues increased 84% to $1.53 billion, supported by accelerating adoption of optical connectivity solutions for AI data centers. Carrier Network sales grew 4% to $854 million, driven by demand for data center interconnect solutions.

Corning also secured four long-term, multibillion-dollar customer agreements during the quarter, including agreements with Verizon and AT&T. These commitments support the company's plans to expand manufacturing capacity and capture rising demand for optical infrastructure.

Corning's Glass Business Faces Market Headwinds

Glass Innovations generated revenues of $1.51 billion, down 3% year over year. Segment net income declined 10% to $328 million, reflecting challenging conditions across key consumer electronics markets.

Higher memory prices weighed on demand for televisions, notebooks and smartphones. Nevertheless, the company continued executing its "More Corning" strategy, increasing content adoption and outperforming underlying end markets.

Automotive revenues advanced 4% to $470 million, while segment net income slipped 1% to $67 million. Recovery in the North American Class 8 truck market offset weakness in light-duty vehicles, where market volumes declined 3%.

GLW's Solar Sales Rise Despite Production Challenges

Solar revenues climbed 37% year over year to $436 million as the company continued ramping production across its wafer and module facilities. However, the segment recorded a net loss of $7 million against a net income of $30 million in the prior-year quarter.

Production ramp-up progressed more slowly than anticipated. Management expects improving productivity to support higher output and profitability. Favorable U.S. trade developments are also strengthening demand for domestically manufactured solar products.

Life Sciences and Emerging Growth Businesses reported revenues of $290 million, up 1%. The segment recorded a net loss of $28 million compared with a loss of $15 million a year earlier, primarily reflecting investments in emerging growth programs.

Capital expenditures totaled $545 million as the company expanded capacity to address growing customer demand. Adjusted free cash flow reached $2.27 billion during the first nine months of 2026.

Cash and cash equivalents stood at $2.54 billion as of Sept. 30, 2026, while long-term debt totaled $7.27 billion.

Corning Projects Strong Q4 Growth Under Springboard Plan

For the fourth quarter of 2026, management expects core sales between $5.2 billion and $5.3 billion, representing approximately 19% year-over-year growth. Core earnings are projected between 96 cents and $1 per share, implying growth of roughly 36%.

The company expects full-year capital expenditures of approximately $2 billion and a core tax rate of around 18.5%.

Under its upgraded 20-30-40 Springboard Plan, Corning aims to reach a $30 billion annualized sales run rate by the end of 2028 and $40 billion by the end of 2030. Management expects earnings to grow faster than sales, supported by AI infrastructure expansion, solar investments and long-term customer partnerships.
