Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • UCTT sees stronger chip demand, with customer forecasts pointing to over $200B in WFE spending in 2027.
  • Ultra Clean targets $4B in annualized capacity by Q1 2027, with investments supporting expansion beyond $5B.
  • UCTT targets 20% gross margin at $4B in revenues, aided by higher utilization and efficiency.

Ultra Clean Holdings, Inc. (UCTT - Free Report) emphasized accelerating semiconductor equipment demand, manufacturing expansion and supply-chain resilience during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call. Management highlighted stronger customer visibility extending into 2027 and 2028.

The company also outlined investments to support higher production volumes while improving profitability through engineering innovation, vertical integration and operational efficiency.

UCTT Sees Stronger Semiconductor Spending Outlook

CEO James Xiao said customer forecasts support wafer fabrication equipment (WFE) spending exceeding $200 billion in 2027. He cited healthy fab utilization, longer customer forecasts and critical component availability.

Demand remains concentrated in leading-edge foundry, DRAM, high-bandwidth memory and advanced packaging applications. AI-driven infrastructure investments continue supporting equipment purchases across these categories.

During questions from Craig-Hallum, Xiao clarified that 2027 expectations have become more firmly established. He also acknowledged analyst projections of approximately $250 billion in 2028 WFE spending without presenting that figure as confirmed customer guidance.

Ultra Clean Accelerates Manufacturing Expansion

CFO Michael Keogh said UCT expects approximately $4 billion in annualized production capacity by the first quarter of 2027, supported by accelerated facility investments.

Management identified additional expansion opportunities within existing facilities, including 15%-20% temporary capacity flexibility. Reaching annual capacity exceeding $5 billion requires further investment of approximately $80 million-$100 million through 2027 and 2028.

Responding to UBS, Xiao emphasized discussions with major customers about long-term demand commitments and capacity utilization. The company intends to align expansion locations and investment timing with customer manufacturing plans.

UCTT Targets Higher Margins Through Efficiency

Keogh reiterated the company's target of 20% gross margin at $4 billion in annual revenues. Higher utilization, engineered-product content, vertical integration and lower-cost manufacturing locations underpin that objective.

Third-quarter non-GAAP gross margin increased 60 basis points sequentially to 17.3%, while operating margin improved 200 basis points to 9%. Keogh cautioned that new capacity could temporarily pressure margins during initial production ramp-up.

UCTT reported adjusted earnings of $1.15 per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.91. Third-quarter revenues were $759 million, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $725.5 million.

Ultra Clean Expands Engineering Partnerships

Xiao highlighted eight new program wins spanning etch, atomic layer deposition, physical vapor deposition and lithography applications. Additional programs remain under development and qualification.

Through its new product introduction initiative, the company is strengthening engineering collaboration and pursuing more valuable subsystem content per semiconductor tool.

During TD Cowen's questioning, Xiao explained that these programs could enter commercial production over the next two to three years. Moving from customer-directed manufacturing toward specification-based development remains central to UCT's strategy for improving margins and market share.

UCTT Addresses Component Shortages and Cash Usage

Supply-chain constraints featured prominently during analyst questioning. Responding to Needham, Xiao indicated that mass flow controller shortages could persist for another one or two quarters.

Management maintained that proactive inventory purchases and advance capacity planning prevented missed subsystem shipments during the third quarter. Keogh nevertheless acknowledged continuing industrywide supply pressures.

Operating cash flow was negative $42.3 million as inventory increased $93.4 million sequentially to $723.3 million. Keogh identified cash conversion and disciplined capital allocation as financial priorities amid sustained expansion.

Ultra Clean Projects Further Sequential Growth

For the fourth quarter, management forecast revenues between $800 million and $860 million, calling for 9.4% sequential growth at the midpoint. Adjusted earnings guidance ranges from $1.11 to $1.35 per share.

Keogh also expects Services revenues to benefit progressively from rising wafer starts as additional U.S. semiconductor facilities ramp up through 2027 and 2028.

Management's overarching focus remains scaling production, strengthening customer relationships and improving operating efficiency while navigating component shortages and elevated working-capital requirements.
