Management outlined plans to accelerate investments in 2027 while acknowledging that branded checkout growth remains subdued. The company's strategy increasingly emphasizes diversified revenue streams, customer engagement and operational efficiency.

PYPL Raises Earnings Outlook as Transformation Advances

President and CEO Enrique Lores emphasized that PayPal's restructuring and diversification efforts are beginning to support financial performance.

Executive vice president and chief financial and operating officer Jamie Miller raised full-year non-GAAP earnings guidance to approximately $5.60 per share from $5.38. Fourth-quarter non-GAAP EPS is projected at approximately $1.43.

Management also raised its transaction margin dollar outlook to approximately $15.7 billion for 2026, including $14.6 billion excluding interest on customer balances.

PayPal Targets Broader Growth Beyond Checkout

Lores identified financial services as an increasingly important driver of transaction profitability, contributing more than 20% of transaction margin dollars in 2026.

Buy Now, Pay Later and Pay with Venmo volumes increased 25% and 43%, respectively. Management plans to expand credit, debit and installment-payment offerings to deepen customer relationships.

Responding to JPMorgan, Lores explained that consumers using financial services generate two to five times the average revenue per active account of customers without those products.

PYPL Sees Venmo Monetization Opportunities

Venmo maintained double-digit payment volume growth, supported by expanding debit card adoption and greater engagement with monetized products.

Lores reported that Venmo debit cards reached 6.7 million monthly active accounts, increasing more than 55%. Third-quarter first-time debit card users totaled a record 1.6 million.

During questioning from Mizuho, Lores highlighted substantial monetization potential, noting that only 23% of Venmo customers currently use financial services. Management sees opportunities to increase average revenue per active account through broader product adoption.

PayPal Faces Persistent Branded Checkout Headwinds

Branded checkout payment volume growth remained between 1% and 2% for the fourth consecutive quarter, despite improvements among selected U.S. merchants.

Miller attributed approximately 70 basis points of headwind to changes in European de minimis tariff treatment. Management expects these pressures to persist through the fourth quarter.

Responding to Wells Fargo Securities, Miller maintained expectations for 1% to 2% branded checkout growth despite improving U.S. merchant performance. PayPal plans to expand its merchant-focused checkout initiatives across Europe in 2027.

PYPL Prioritizes Cost Savings and Technology Upgrades

Lores described organizational simplification as central to PayPal's transformation, including workforce reductions exceeding 2,000 employees and the elimination of three management layers.

Management remains committed to at least $1.5 billion in gross annualized cost savings over two to three years, with more than $700 million expected by the end of 2026.

Technology modernization remains another priority. PayPal migrated 7.5 billion customer records to cloud infrastructure and expanded AI-powered customer support. Partnerships involving Meta also support its ambitions in agentic commerce.

PayPal Balances Investment With Shareholder Returns

Miller emphasized that stronger transaction economics and operating discipline are creating capacity to finance growth investments.

The company generated approximately $2 billion in adjusted free cash flow during the quarter and repurchased $1.5 billion in shares. Management anticipates at least $6.5 billion in adjusted free cash flow for 2026.

During questioning from BMO Capital Markets, Miller indicated that 2027 would involve additional investment in transaction margins and operating expenses. Management targets non-GAAP earnings growth broadly comparable to 2026, with greater acceleration envisioned beyond next year.

PYPL Maintains a Disciplined Growth Strategy

Management characterized the quarter as progress toward a more diversified payments business, supported by financial services, Venmo monetization and stronger enterprise processing economics.

Lores reiterated the longer-term ambition of mid-single-digit transaction margin dollar growth and sustainable double-digit earnings expansion. Execution across checkout improvements, operating efficiencies and reinvestment remains central to achieving those objectives.
