KMI's Project Backlog Reaches Record $14.4 Billion

CEO Kimberly Dang said the company's expansion backlog increased from $9.6 billion to $14.4 billion, reflecting $5.4 billion in additions and $700 million in projects entering service.

The additions include Southeast Connector and Permian Link, two major natural gas pipeline projects representing approximately $4.7 billion of Kinder Morgan's investment share.

Dang emphasized that both projects have at least 20-year take-or-pay contracts with creditworthy customers. The backlog carries a 5.7-times project EBITDA multiple, extending contracted cash flow growth into the next decade.

Kinder Morgan Targets Growing Power Demand

Southeast Connector will transport approximately 2.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas into the Southeast, supported by investment-grade utility customers.

During questioning from Barclays, Sital Mody, president of Natural Gas Pipelines, said additional shipper commitments could expand project capacity to approximately 3.5 Bcf/d.

Permian Link will transport approximately 2.8 Bcf/d toward growing Texas Panhandle power markets. Management identified an A-rated hyperscaler as its anchor customer, reinforcing the company's preference for demand-driven infrastructure investments.

KMI Sees Further Pipeline Expansion Opportunities

A Jefferies analyst questioned whether the newly sanctioned projects substantially reduced Kinder Morgan's remaining development opportunities.

Dang responded that significant potential projects remain outside the formal backlog. She explained that new pipelines can create additional infrastructure requirements as transportation bottlenecks emerge elsewhere.

Mody also discussed Tennessee Gas Pipeline's 219 South opportunity, which attracted more than 2 Bcf/d of customer interest. He indicated approximately $1.5 billion of potential investment, with the ultimate scope dependent on binding commitments.

Kinder Morgan Flags Uneven Earnings Growth Ahead

CFO David Michels said adjusted EBITDA increased 9% to $2.18 billion, supported by improved contributions across all four business segments.

Management expects full-year adjusted EBITDA and adjusted EPS to exceed their respective budgets by more than 6% and 13%.

However, Michels identified approximately $225 million of favorable nonrecurring contributions and another $175 million from commodity prices. Responding to JPMorgan, he cautioned against assuming those benefits would repeat in 2027.

KMI Balances Capital Spending With Financial Flexibility

Dang indicated that annual capital expenditures could approach $4 billion over the next several years as major projects advance.

Quarter-end net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA was 3.5 times, down from 3.8 times at the beginning of 2026. Management expects year-end leverage of approximately 3.6 times.

The company continues prioritizing internally generated cash flow to finance expansion while maintaining balance sheet flexibility and supporting its dividend commitments.

Kinder Morgan Maintains Focus on Contracted Growth

Executive chairman Richard Kinder reiterated the company's strategy of expanding its infrastructure network through long-term, contracted investments supported primarily by internally generated cash.

Dang acknowledged that project commissioning schedules would create uneven annual earnings growth. Nevertheless, management remains focused on converting its substantial backlog into recurring cash flows while pursuing additional customer commitments.
