Is China Winning the Robotics Race? See Through the ETF Lens

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • China installed 354,000 industrial robots in 2025, accounting for 59% of global factory robot installations.
  • ETFs like AICH offer exposure to Chinese precision actuators and robotics technologies.
  • China's 15th Five-Year Plan targets 100,000 humanoid robots by 2027.

China's industrial robotics sector has recently achieved two historic milestones simultaneously. At a State Council press conference on Oct. 19, 2026, the National Bureau of Statistics reported that China's industrial robot output climbed 29.1% year over year in the first nine months of 2026, maintaining double-digit monthly growth throughout the period.

Barely a month earlier, the International Federation of Robotics confirmed that China installed 354,000 industrial robots in 2025 alone, accounting for 59% of every new factory robot deployed anywhere on earth, as per the International Federation of Robotics (“IFR”) report.

Impressively, China now operates approximately 2 million industrial robots — 4.3 times Japan's fleet — whereas EU installations fell 11% and Japan dropped 19%, as cited in TechTimes.

This latest development puts the spotlight on exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offering exposure to the Chinese companies that are the core accelerators of this robotics revolution.

Looking ahead, investors seeking to capitalize on this trend should assess the companies benefiting from China's robotics boom and the country's long-term objectives in this space before exploring related ETF investment opportunities.

Companies Powering China's Robotics Boom

China's robotics and AI ecosystem is anchored by distinct groups of companies operating across two layers of the value chain.

At the hardware layer, companies like Leader Harmonious Drive manufacture harmonic reducers (strain wave gears) and precision motion control products that act as the vital "joints" and actuator modules in robotic arms, industrial automation and humanoid robots. Similarly, Yushu Technology (operating internationally as Unitree Robotics) is a leading global developer and manufacturer of high-performance consumer and industrial-grade legged robots, including quadruped robot dogs and general-purpose humanoid robots. Together, these kinds of firms supply the essential parts that make humanoid robots function.

At the intelligence layer, Montage Technology designs memory interface chips for servers and AI data centers, while Cambricon Technologies designs neural processing units and AI chips. Meanwhile, Hygon Information Technology develops CPUs and DCUs for AI computing. These companies power the inference and training workloads that increasingly drive robot autonomy.

To this end, it is imperative to mention that China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) designates robotics as the "main driver of economic growth," targeting 100,000 humanoid robots by 2027. In October 2026, Beijing announced a $10 billion worth investment initiative for AI-driven robotics (as cited in TechTimes). This investment strategy, coupled with the initiatives undertaken by the aforementioned companies, is expected to support China's efforts to achieve its humanoid robotics target within the planned timeline.

Viewing Through ETF Lens

The "See Through ETF Lense" approach is justified by the sheer complexity and volatility of this ecosystem.

Individual stock picking carries substantial risk: Unitree surged 629% on its debut, but its valuation now hinges on execution against aggressive production targets.

Against this backdrop, a China-focused Robotics ETF offers the most prudent strategy by diversifying across component suppliers, robot makers, and AI software providers — capturing the ecosystem's upside while mitigating single-company risks.

Three China-Focused Robotics ETFs to Consider

Considering the aforementioned discussion, investors eager to capitalize on the rally of China’s robotics industry may consider adding the following ETFs to their portfolios:
