Read MoreHide Full Article

The global sportswear industry is witnessing an intensifying battle for market dominance as industry heavyweights NIKE, Inc. (NKE - Free Report) and adidas AG (ADDYY - Free Report) compete for consumer loyalty, innovation leadership and market share. NIKE remains the world's leading athletic footwear and apparel company, while Germany-based adidas stands as its formidable challenger, leveraging its sporting heritage, product innovation and strong lifestyle appeal.

Both companies design, market and distribute athletic footwear, apparel and accessories through wholesale networks, company-operated stores and digital platforms. While NIKE is focused on revitalizing its brand momentum and defending its market leadership, adidas is capitalizing on evolving consumer preferences and lifestyle trends. Against this backdrop, which sportswear giant offers stronger investment potential? Let us find out.

The Case for NKE

NIKE maintains a dominant position in the global sporting goods industry, supported by a diversified portfolio of footwear, apparel and accessories. Its Performance business generated $16 billion in fiscal 2026 revenues and grew in the high single digits in first-quarter fiscal 2027. Running delivered double-digit growth, while NIKE nearly tripled its share of the Max cushioning category in the past year, reinforcing its competitive strength.

NIKE's Sport Offense strategy emphasizes innovation, sport-specific assortments and stronger consumer engagement. Its portfolio spans Running, Basketball, Football, Training and Sportswear, targeting athletes and lifestyle-conscious consumers. Women's Basketball signature revenues expanded nearly 500% between fiscal 2022 and 2026. Meanwhile, NIKE is strengthening digital distribution in China, restoring Jordan Brand exclusivity and leveraging product innovations to reinforce its premium positioning.

However, financial headwinds persist. First-quarter fiscal 2027 revenues declined 4% to $11.2 billion, reflecting weakness in Sportswear, Jordan Brand and Greater China. Nevertheless, the gross margin improved 60 basis points to 42.8%, while earnings reached 48 cents per share. Its Pace transformation initiative targets $2.5 billion in savings, potentially supporting operational efficiency and long-term profitability despite near-term revenue pressures.

The Case for ADDYY

adidas continues to strengthen its position as a leading global sporting goods company through innovation, brand appeal and expanding market share. Its Performance business grew 39% in second-quarter 2026, supported by strong demand in Football, Running and Training. Running revenues increased 30%, while Greater China registered 15% currency-neutral growth, reflecting continued market-share gains.

adidas' diversified portfolio, featuring Adizero, Samba, Superstar and Originals, appeals to athletes, fitness enthusiasts and fashion-conscious consumers. Its strategy emphasizes localized product development, premium brand positioning and stronger retail partnerships. Digital expansion remains a key growth driver, with direct-to-consumer revenues climbing 25% and e-commerce sales increasing 27%. World Cup marketing campaigns generated more than 9 billion views and 400 million engagements, strengthening global consumer connections.

Financial momentum remains encouraging. Second-quarter revenues reached a record €6.7 billion, increasing 14% currency-neutral, while apparel sales rose 35%. The gross margin expanded 80 basis points to 52.5%, and operating profit increased 5%. Management raised its 2026 revenue growth outlook to 9-10%, reflecting sustained demand, although promotional pressures and elevated marketing investments remain challenges.

From a valuation perspective, both companies are trading below their respective historical forward price-to-sales multiples, suggesting attractive entry points. However, adidas commands a lower valuation multiple than NIKE and trades at a deeper discount to its historical median. This combination of a relatively resilient share-price performance and a more compelling valuation makes adidas appear better positioned from a valuation standpoint.

NKE vs. ADDYY: Which Stock Deserves Attention?

While NIKE retains its leadership in the global sportswear industry, its ongoing turnaround efforts, declining revenues and persistent challenges in Sportswear, Jordan Brand and Greater China cloud its near-term prospects. Although strategic initiatives aimed at improving innovation, brand positioning and operational efficiency offer long-term potential, earnings pressure and downward estimate revisions suggest that a meaningful recovery may take time.

In contrast, adidas appears better positioned to capitalize on growing demand for performance footwear, lifestyle apparel and digital retail. Its robust revenue momentum, expanding market share and improving profitability reinforce confidence in its growth trajectory. Moreover, upward earnings estimate revisions signal growing optimism about adidas' earnings potential.

Coupled with a relatively resilient stock performance and a cheaper valuation, ADDYY emerges as the more compelling investment choice over NKE, offering stronger growth prospects and attractive upside potential. ADDYY currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), whereas NKE carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell).
