CCJ Falls 27.6% in 6 Months as Execution Risks Test the Nuclear Thesis

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • CCJ's adjusted Q2 2026 earnings fell 75% to C$77 million, while first-half operating cash flow plunged 81%.
  • Mine disruptions cut quarterly uranium production 15% to 3.9 million pounds in Q226.
  • Uranium prices reached $95.50 per pound, but rising costs and pricing ceilings could limit earnings gains.

Cameco Corporation (CCJ - Free Report) shares have fallen 27.6% in the past six months, leaving investors to weigh a favorable nuclear-demand backdrop against company-specific execution concerns.

The decline does not erase Cameco’s long-term exposure to uranium, fuel services and Westinghouse. Yet uneven earnings, mine disruptions and rising costs make the near-term setup less straightforward.

Cameco’s Earnings Volatility Clouds the Setup

Second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings fell 75% year over year to C$77 million ($56 million), while revenues declined 7% to C$814 million ($588 million). For the first half, operating cash flow dropped 81% to C$109 million ($78 million).

Results remain sensitive to uranium delivery timing and Westinghouse contributions. The prior-year quarter included an unusually large contribution tied to the Dukovany nuclear project, making year-over-year comparisons difficult and underscoring the uneven timing of profitability.

CCJ’s Mine Disruptions Keep Execution Risk High

Spring flooding and difficult road conditions disrupted supply routes to McArthur River and Key Lake in the second quarter. Cigar Lake also experienced an approximately two-week production interruption after quarter-end.

Attributable uranium production fell 15% year over year to 3.9 million pounds in the quarter. Management nevertheless maintained its 2026 attributable production guidance of 19.5 million to 21.5 million pounds, putting added weight on operational recovery and reliable infrastructure.

Cameco’s Costs Could Limit a Uranium Price Benefit

Higher uranium prices do not flow directly into equivalent earnings gains. Many market-related contracts scheduled for 2026 have pricing ceilings, while purchased uranium remains exposed to prevailing market prices.

Cameco’s combined cost of produced and purchased uranium rose 36% year over year to C$62.21 per pound in the second quarter. The company also raised its 2026 uranium unit cost-of-sales outlook, reflecting foreign-exchange effects and higher purchased-material costs.

CCJ Still Has Strong Nuclear Demand Behind It

Long-term uranium prices reached $95.50 per pound in the second quarter, and Cameco raised its expected average realized uranium price to C$91-C$96 per pound. Contracted deliveries averaging more than 28 million pounds annually from 2026 through 2030 provide additional visibility.

The broader nuclear buildout also remains active. Constellation Energy Corporation (CEG - Free Report) recently announced agreements supporting additional nuclear output from its existing fleet, reinforcing demand for reliable nuclear generation. Centrus Energy Corp. (LEU - Free Report) is expanding U.S. uranium-enrichment capacity and has a Department of Energy contract supporting commercial-scale high-assay, low-enriched uranium production, highlighting investment across the nuclear fuel chain.

CCJ’s Signals Still Favor Caution After the Drop

The 27.6% decline alone does not make CCJ a clear value opportunity. Execution at its major uranium assets, delivery timing, purchased-material costs and the cadence of Westinghouse contributions remain important variables for near-term results.

CCJ currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

Its VGM Score of F is accompanied by a Value Score of D, Growth Score of F and Momentum Score of B. The stronger Momentum Score is a relative positive, but the weak Value and Growth readings limit the appeal of the broader Style Score profile. Since Style Scores are designed to complement the Zacks Rank rather than replace it, the combination supports a measured approach while investors watch for more consistent execution and earnings delivery.
