Nomura Maintains ROE Ambitions Amid Market Volatility

Chief financial officer Hiroyuki Moriuchi highlighted the company's improved earnings capacity despite volatile financial markets. Second-quarter return on equity reached 10.9%, while first-half ROE was13.3%.

These results supported management's revised 2030 ROE objective of 10%-12% or higher, introduced in May 2026.

Moriuchi emphasized that structural reforms and diversification have strengthened profitability. Nevertheless, rising interest rates, geopolitical uncertainty and equity-market corrections remain important operating considerations.

NMR Sees Recurring Revenues Strengthening Wealth Business

Wealth Management's recurring revenues increased 13% sequentially to a record ¥66.7 billion. Net inflows into recurring revenue assets reached a record ¥755.4 billion, reflecting sustained demand for long-term investment products.

Moriuchi noted that recurring revenue assets expanded 20% from September 2025 to approximately ¥31 trillion. The recurring revenue cost coverage ratio reached 79%, strengthening the division's earnings stability.

During questioning from BofA Securities, management indicated that October Wealth Management revenues remained broadly consistent with second-quarter levels. Clients continued favoring diversified investment products despite cautious trading activity.

Nomura Targets Wholesale Efficiency Through Operating Leverage

Wholesale profitability attracted considerable analyst scrutiny after its cost-income ratio reached approximately 85%, exceeding management's 80% target.

Responding to Daiwa Securities and JPMorgan Securities analysts, Moriuchi identified inflation, technology spending, personnel expenses and investments in International Wealth Management and equities as important cost drivers.

Management intends to improve operating leverage through revenue growth, technology modernization and artificial intelligence-driven efficiencies. Moriuchi acknowledged a slower October start but expected monetization opportunities to help reduce the cost ratio as market conditions develop.

NMR Highlights Bond Demand and Investment Banking Opportunities

Rising Japanese interest rates are reshaping client investment preferences. Wealth Management bond sales increased 66% sequentially, supported by stronger demand for government and corporate bonds.

Moriuchi explained that individual government bonds provide an accessible introduction to securities investing. Management expects greater familiarity with bonds to encourage broader participation in investment trusts and other asset classes.

Investment Banking revenues increased 9% sequentially to ¥54.7 billion. Responding to JPMorgan Securities, Moriuchi described the debt capital markets pipeline as robust, supported by continued corporate financing demand and significant transactions.

Nomura Addresses Overseas Expansion and Credit Exposure

International Wealth Management remained an expansion priority. Moriuchi told BofA Securities that revenues had increased approximately sixfold since the business transferred to Wholesale in 2020.

More than 3,000 client accounts have been opened, primarily in Hong Kong and Singapore. Management also highlighted its Dubai presence and continued investment in client-facing personnel.

Regarding artificial intelligence infrastructure financing, Moriuchi told UBS that Nomura favors medium-sized transactions over major balance-sheet-intensive deals. He emphasized selective underwriting, transaction structuring and credit-risk controls while acknowledging growing opportunities in data-center financing.

NMR Balances Capital Returns With Growth Priorities

Management maintained its commitment to a dividend payout ratio of at least 40% and a total payout ratio of at least 50%.

Moriuchi indicated that potential acquisitions would be evaluated alongside financial soundness, organic growth opportunities and shareholder distributions. Large-scale asset management acquisitions are not currently anticipated.

The company enters the second half focused on recurring revenue expansion, Wholesale efficiency and cross-divisional collaboration. Management remains cautious about immediate market conditions while maintaining its longer-term profitability objectives.

What NMR's Zacks Rank and Style Scores Indicate

NMR currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), indicating favorable earnings estimate revision characteristics and relatively attractive near-term performance prospects under the Zacks ranking framework. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.

Its Value Score of C indicates middle-range valuation characteristics, while its Growth Score of F reflects particularly weak growth-style attributes. In contrast, the Momentum Score of A highlights strong price momentum characteristics. However, the VGM Score of D indicates that the combined value, growth and momentum profile remains less favorable than that of stocks carrying A or B scores.
