HWM Q3 Earnings Call Highlights a Longer Gas Turbine Runway

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Howmet Aerospace's gas turbine revenues rose 45% in Q3, fueled by output growth and market-share gains.
  • HWM lifted 2026 guidance to $10.3 billion in revenues and $5.50 in adjusted EPS after beating Q3 estimates.
  • HWM outlined seven new plants; major turbine customers' 2031 capacity is sold out, with 2032 close behind.

Howmet Aerospace Inc. (HWM - Free Report) put industrial gas turbines at the center of its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, citing market-share gains and a longer demand runway.

Executive chairman and CEO John Plant also raised annual guidance and outlined capacity plans as analysts probed competition, margins and demand durability.

HWM Expands Its Gas Turbine Ambitions

Plant reported 45% third-quarter gas turbine revenue growth, driven by output expansion and market-share gains. Demand extends beyond currently planned capacity.

In response to a Morgan Stanley analyst, Plant shortened the timeline for doubling 2025 gas turbine sales to three years and outlined a potential 2.5-fold increase to about $2.5 billion by decade-end.

Plant said that major turbine customers' 2031 capacity is sold out, with 2032 approaching that point.

A Bernstein analyst pressed on profitability. Plant mentioned that gas turbine and aerospace margins are broadly comparable, with some fixed-cost leverage from higher volumes, but stressed long-term customer relationships.

Howmet Raises Its 2026 Targets

Adjusted EPS of $1.46 beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.37, while revenues of $2.7 billion topped the $2.59 billion estimate.

Plant lifted baseline 2026 guidance to $10.3 billion in revenues, $3.33 billion in adjusted EBITDA and $5.50 in adjusted earnings per share. Those targets rose $250 million, $100 million and 23 cents, respectively.

Fourth-quarter targets center on $2.75 billion in revenues, $900 million in adjusted EBITDA and $1.50 in adjusted earnings per share. Full-year free cash flow guidance rose $100 million to $2 billion.

For 2027, Plant introduced a revenue outlook of approximately $11.5 billion, representing 12% growth. He expects rising aircraft production, although elevated jet fuel costs could affect airline schedules.

HWM Addresses Engine Blade Competition

Executive vice president and CFO Patrick Winterlich said that commercial aerospace revenues grew 32%, including 27% organically, on original-equipment and spares demand. Companywide spares revenue increased 30% to approximately $570 million.

A Morgan Stanley analyst asked whether engine manufacturers' vertical integration could challenge Howmet. Plant defended its technical capabilities and said added manufacturing capacity for GE would take two years to install.

Addressing Jefferies, Plant highlighted upgraded LEAP and geared-turbofan blades designed for higher temperatures. He expects more engine content and maintenance requirements to support aerospace demand.

Howmet Tracks Defense Demand and Budget Timing

Winterlich reported 10% defense aerospace growth, but just 3% organically, led by spares for legacy fighter platforms.

During questions from Citi, Plant identified opportunities from inventory replenishment and missile components. Replenishment is not embedded in current planning assumptions, while several production agreements await finalization.

Plant expects defense sales to increase in 2027, but said that further clarity depends on budget decisions and multiyear contracts. Additional demand remains distinct from confirmed orders.

HWM Navigates Diverging Segment Margins

Winterlich reported 33% revenue growth in Engine Products to $1.45 billion. Its adjusted EBITDA margin rose 580 basis points to 39.1% despite the addition of about 520 employees.

Fastening Systems revenues increased 41%, helped by acquisitions, but margin fell 140 basis points to 29.4%. Winterlich attributed the dilution to the CAM acquisition.

Forged Wheels revenues climbed 32% amid recovering North American truck demand and aluminum cost pass-through. Its adjusted EBITDA margin dropped 330 basis points to 26.3%.

Howmet Funds Capacity and Shareholder Returns

Plant expects elevated capital spending beyond 2027, particularly in gas turbines. During the Q&A, he described seven new manufacturing plants and three additional facilities under consideration.

Winterlich reported $562 million in free cash flow after $147 million of quarterly capital expenditure. Net debt to trailing EBITDA improved to 1.3 times, while third-quarter share repurchases totaled $500 million.

The board expanded repurchase authorization by $5 billion, taking total authorization to $5.397 billion. Howmet also increased its quarterly dividend 17% to 14 cents per share.

HWM Keeps Its Expansion Disciplined

Plant emphasized long-term customer contracts to support manufacturing investment, especially as gas turbine demand extends into the next decade.

He also acknowledged that simultaneous growth in aerospace, defense and turbines is stretching staffing and production capacity. Cash generation remains central to expansion decisions.
