More on the Liverty TIPS Stent Graft

Portal hypertension occurs when blood pressure increases in the portal vein system, potentially leading to serious complications such as internal bleeding and fluid accumulation in the abdomen. TIPS is a minimally invasive procedure that creates a new pathway for blood flow through the liver to relieve this pressure. It is commonly used to manage complications such as variceal bleeding and refractory ascites.

The Liverty TIPS Stent Graft is designed to accommodate varying patient requirements through an expandable diameter ranging from 6 to 10 millimeters and covered stent lengths of 4 to 10 centimeters, the longest commercially available. Its fully sheathed, tri-axial delivery system is intended to provide deployment control and accuracy. Radiopaque markers support visualization and placement under fluoroscopy, while the delivery system enables sheathless tracking through the liver parenchyma.

The U.S. launch is supported by six-month interim results from the prospective, multicenter ARCH clinical study, which enrolled 177 patients. The study is the first and only IDE study to provide clinical data on small-diameter (6-7 mm) TIPS. The system also enters the U.S. market with established clinical and physician experience in Europe.

With the commercial introduction of Liverty, BD continues to expand its interventional portfolio and provide physicians with additional options for managing complications associated with portal hypertension.

Industry Prospects Favoring the Market

According to Future Market Insights, the global portal hypertension management market is estimated to be valued at $3.5 billion in 2026 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 4.8% through 2036.

Factors such as the rising prevalence of chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis, increasing demand for treatments for variceal bleeding and other complications, growing adoption of minimally invasive procedures like TIPS and expanding interventional radiology capabilities at hepatology centers are expected to drive market growth.
