Here's How Much You'd Have If You Invested $1000 in Cheniere Energy a Decade Ago

Read MoreHide Full Article

How much a stock's price changes over time is a significant driver for most investors. Not only can price performance impact your portfolio, but it can help you compare investment results across sectors and industries as well.

Another thing that can drive investing is the fear of missing out, or FOMO. This particularly applies to tech giants and popular consumer-facing stocks.

What if you'd invested in Cheniere Energy (LNG - Free Report) ten years ago? It may not have been easy to hold on to LNG for all that time, but if you did, how much would your investment be worth today?

Cheniere Energy's Business In-Depth

With that in mind, let's take a look at Cheniere Energy's main business drivers.

Houston, TX-based Cheniere Energy, Inc. is primarily engaged in businesses of liquefied natural gas (LNG - Free Report) . It constructs and operates LNG terminal and is also involved in LNG and natural gas marketing. The company, through its controlling interest in Cheniere Energy Partners, L.P., owns and operates the Sabine Pass LNG terminal in Louisiana – North America’s first large-scale liquefied gas export facility. Furthermore, Cheniere Energy owns and operates the 94-mile Creole Trail Pipeline – an interconnect between the Sabine Pass receiving terminal and the downstream markets – through its subsidiary.

Cheniere Energy owns and operates the Corpus Christi LNG terminal in Texas, with three original trains and seven Stage 3 midscale trains. Capacity is expected to exceed 30 mtpa after Midscale Trains 8 and 9 and debottlenecking are completed. As of June 30, 2026, Corpus Christi Liquefaction facility (CCL) Stage 3 was 98.4% complete; Midscale Trains 1-6 were operational, and Train 7 was under construction/commissioning with first LNG expected imminently. The total production capacities for these trains are expected to be more than 10 Mtpa. In December 2025, Train 4 of CCL Stage 3 Project reached substantial completion, following the earlier completions of Trains 1, 2 and 3.

Cheniere Energy is also involved in LNG and natural gas marketing activities through its subsidiary, Cheniere Marketing, LLC.

Global LNG demand is likely to continue growing for the next few years. Cheniere Energy, the U.S.’s LNG export pure play, foresees the fundamentals of LNG to be favorable in the long run, considering the secular shift to the cleaner burning fuel for power generation worldwide and in the Asia-Pacific region in particular. While the increasing demand for gas in the European power sector will be a key factor in the near-term LNG supply rise, the consumption boost is primarily set to come from Asian importers like China, India, South Korea and Pakistan.

Bottom Line

While anyone can invest, building a lucrative investment portfolio takes research, patience, and a little bit of risk. If you had invested in Cheniere Energy ten years ago, you're probably feeling pretty good about your investment today.

According to our calculations, a $1000 investment made in November 2016 would be worth $8,609.67, or a gain of 760.97%, as of November 3, 2026, and this return excludes dividends but includes price increases.

The S&P 500 rose 259.47% and the price of gold increased 192.50% over the same time frame in comparison.

Analysts are forecasting more upside for LNG too.

Cheniere Energy benefits from long-term LNG contracts that provide cash-flow visibility and a flexible export platform that can serve shifting global demand. Completion of Corpus Christi Stage 3 expands operating capacity, while new customer agreements support future brownfield growth. Higher production and cash generation underpin dividends, repurchases and investment. However, rising competing LNG supply could weaken future contracting terms. Large expansion commitments and substantial debt leave financial flexibility exposed to execution demands. Reported earnings also remain uneven because derivative valuations can overwhelm operating gains. Regulatory approvals and volatile market conditions add uncertainty to the timing and returns of new projects. These offsets support a Neutral recommendation on LNG shares.

The stock has jumped 13.36% over the past four weeks. Additionally, no earnings estimate has gone lower in the past two months, compared to 5 higher, for fiscal 2026; the consensus estimate has moved up as well.
