  • Seagate expects buybacks to accelerate in calendar 2027, backed by $4.4B authorization and cloud demand.

Seagate Technology Holdings plc (STX - Free Report) has strengthened its balance sheet and is shifting its capital allocation priorities toward enhancing shareholder returns.

In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, the company retired $1.2 billion in debt, including its remaining convertible notes and approximately $1 billion in high-yield debt. This reduced gross debt to approximately $2.4 billion and brought the net leverage ratio down to just 0.2 times.

Post the quarter close, STX retired an additional $750 million in high-yield senior notes, bringing its principal debt to approximately $1.6 billion. Given the deleveraging efforts and subsequent lower interest expenses, management expects other income and expenses to reduce further in the current quarter to nearly $25 million. It also expects to exit the calendar year 2026 with a net cash positive position.

The company's improving cash generation supports accelerating capital returns. Seagate generated free cash flow of $1.5 billion during the fiscal first quarter, more than tripling year over year, supported by stronger profitability and disciplined capital expenditures.

STX returned $568 million to its shareholders through dividends and share repurchases in the fiscal first quarter, nearly doubling from the previous quarter. The company also raised its quarterly dividend nearly 3% to 76 cents per share.

Seagate had $4.4 billion remaining under its share repurchase authorization at quarter-end. Management expects buybacks to accelerate significantly beginning in the calendar year 2027.

Seagate's outlook remains encouraging, supported by robust cloud storage demand and increasing adoption of its HAMR-based Mozaic platform.  Management anticipates fiscal second-quarter revenues of $4.8 billion (+/- $100 million). At the midpoint, this indicates a 70% year-over-year improvement.

Seagate expects cash generation to improve throughout fiscal 2027 while maintaining capital expenditures within 4-6% of revenues. However, rising external component costs and investments associated with HAMR transitions could pressure cash generation.
