Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Citigroup targets $2-$2.5B in annualized savings through workforce cuts and restructuring by 2026.
  • Technology modernization, automation and AI investments aim to simplify operations and improve productivity.
  • Citigroup targets ROTCE of 14-15% over the medium term as recurring savings support profitability.

Citigroup Inc. (C - Free Report) continues to streamline operations through workforce reductions, organizational restructuring, technology modernization and automation. These initiatives are expected to reduce operating complexity, generate productivity savings and support sustainable profitability.

As part of this transformation, the company announced its plan in January 2024 to reduce its global workforce by nearly 8% by 2026. It reduced headcount to 217,000 as of Sept. 30, 2026, from 227,000 a year earlier.  The bank incurred more than $1 billion in severance expenses in the first nine months of 2026 to drive structural efficiencies. Workforce optimization, reduced management layers and technology investments are expected to generate $2-2.5 billion in annualized savings by 2026.

Beyond workforce optimization, Citigroup is driving efficiency through process simplification, platform consolidation and increased automation, reducing manual touchpoints across operations. At the same time, the company continues to invest in technology and artificial intelligence to strengthen operational resilience, improve productivity and support revenue growth. To accelerate these initiatives, Citigroup plans to invest an incremental $5 billion between 2026 and 2028, with spending focused on technology modernization, marketing, front-office talent and branch renovations.

C expects workforce optimization, organizational simplification and technology investments to generate $2-$2.5 billion in annualized cost savings by 2026. Management expects the full-year efficiency ratio to be slightly below 60%, improving to 55-60% in 2027-2028 and below 55% during 2029-2031. It anticipates return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) exceeding 11% in 2026, targeting 11-13% in 2027-2028 and 14-15% over the medium term.

Overall, Citigroup's restructuring and AI-driven productivity initiatives should support long-term profitability. Although elevated investments may constrain near-term gains, declining transformation expenses and recurring savings should strengthen operating margins.
