Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • USFD shares rose 11.8% in a month, supported by accelerating customer growth and stronger margins.
  • Independent restaurant case volume grew 5.1%, while adjusted EBITDA per case climbed 8.3% to $2.73.
  • Pronto expansion and AI tools support productivity, but weak restaurant traffic and a 19.9X P/E pose risks.

Shares of US Foods Holding Corp. (USFD - Free Report) have gained 11.8% in the past month, drawing attention to whether improving customer growth, margins and productivity can keep supporting the stock.

The operating picture has strengthened, but valuation leaves less room for disappointment. Target-customer gains, cost savings and technology initiatives support the fundamental case, while restaurant traffic pressure and a premium earnings multiple temper the near-term setup.

USFD’s Target-Customer Growth Is Accelerating

Independent restaurant case volume increased 5.1% in the second quarter of fiscal 2026, the fifth consecutive quarter of acceleration. Organic independent restaurant case growth was 5%, showing that the improvement was not dependent on acquisitions.

Growth also broadened across healthcare and hospitality, where volumes increased 3.5% and 4.4%, respectively. That mix can help US Foods sustain above-industry case growth even as chain volume remains weak.

US Foods’ Margin Gains Strengthen the Fundamental Case

Adjusted gross profit per case increased 5% year over year in the fiscal second quarter, while adjusted EBITDA per case rose 8.3% to $2.73. Adjusted gross profit per case grew faster than adjusted operating expenses per case, supporting operating leverage.

Strategic vendor management generated more than $50 million in cost-of-goods savings during the first half of fiscal 2026. US Foods remains focused on more than $300 million of cumulative savings across its 2025-2027 plan, with inventory and indirect-spend programs providing additional support.

USFD’s Pronto and AI Push Could Support More Upside

Pronto is now available in 52 markets, while Pronto Next Day operates in 35 markets. Management expects about $1.3 billion of Pronto sales in fiscal 2026 and raised its fiscal 2027 expectation to more than $1.7 billion from $1.5 billion.

US Foods is also using artificial intelligence to support sales and operations. Visit Assistant generated more than 700,000 actionable seller insights in its first six weeks, while forecasting, labor-planning and routing tools are aimed at improving service and productivity. These initiatives may support customer retention and seller effectiveness, but they are not guaranteed drivers of further share-price gains.

US Foods Still Faces Traffic and Valuation Pressure

Restaurant industry traffic remains pressured, and chain volume declined 1.5% in the fiscal second quarter. Adjusted operating expenses per case increased 3.7%, reflecting cost inflation, higher fuel expense and costs tied to the sales-compensation transition.

Competition also remains active. Sysco Corporation (SYY - Free Report) reported 2.5% growth in U.S. Foodservice volume in its fiscal fourth quarter, while Performance Food Group Company (PFGC - Free Report) posted 5.8% organic independent Foodservice case growth in its fiscal fourth quarter. USFD also trades at 19.9X forward 12-month earnings, above 14.8X for the Zacks sub-industry, 18.5X for the Zacks Consumer Staples sector and 18.5X for the S&P 500.

USFD’s Strong Style Scores Meet a Cautious Near-Term Signal

The bottom line is that improving target-customer growth, margin execution and productivity give the recent advance fundamental support, but traffic pressure and a premium valuation make continued execution important.

USFD currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell), which adds caution to the near-term outlook despite favorable Style Scores. The stock has a Growth Score of A, Momentum Score of B and VGM Score of A, indicating favorable growth and momentum characteristics. Its Value Score of C is more neutral and fits the richer valuation profile. Because Style Scores are designed to complement the Zacks Rank, the current #4 Rank keeps the short-term signal cautious despite strength in several operating measures.
