Is USFD Worth Buying as Fast EPS Growth Meets a Premium Valuation?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • US Foods' fiscal 2026 earnings are projected to rise 20.1%, supported by volume growth and margin expansion.
  • USFD trades at 19.9X forward earnings, above its industry's 14.8X and its five-year median of 16.9X.
  • USFD generated $725M in first-half operating cash flow, but rising costs and weak chain volumes pose risks.

US Foods Holding Corp. (USFD - Free Report) combines accelerating earnings, improving margins and healthy cash generation with a valuation above several key benchmarks. That mix makes the investment case less about business momentum and more about whether the current price already reflects much of the improvement.

The growth profile remains attractive, but the premium multiple and a cautious near-term Zacks signal argue for discipline. Investors may want to weigh the company’s operating progress against the reduced margin for execution setbacks.

USFD’s Growth Case Remains Compelling

USFD’s fiscal 2026 earnings are projected to increase 20.1%, while management continues to expect adjusted earnings growth of 18-24%. Second-quarter adjusted earnings rose 21%, supported by higher volumes, margin expansion and share repurchases.

The customer mix strengthens that trajectory. Independent restaurant case volume increased 5.1% in the second quarter, while healthcare and hospitality volumes rose 3.5% and 4.4%, respectively. Management identifies these as faster-growing and more profitable target customer types, so continued share gains in these segments could support earnings growth even if broader restaurant traffic stays uneven.

US Foods Trades at a Clear Earnings Premium

USFD trades at 19.9X forward 12-month earnings, above 14.8X for its sub-industry, 18.5X for the Consumer Staples sector and 18.5X for the S&P 500. The stock also stands above its five-year median multiple of 16.9X.

That valuation raises the hurdle for further upside. Faster earnings growth can justify some premium, but the current multiple leaves less room for disappointment if case growth slows, productivity gains moderate or cost pressures reaccelerate.

USFD’s Cash Flow Adds Financial Flexibility

US Foods generated $725 million of operating cash flow in the first half of fiscal 2026. Operating cash flow excluding changes in net working capital improved to $718 million from $644 million a year earlier, pointing to stronger underlying cash generation.

The balance sheet adds flexibility. Net leverage ended the second quarter at 2.6X, within management’s 2.0-3.0X target range, and the company has no long-term debt maturities until 2028. That capacity supports investment in growth initiatives, share repurchases and potential accretive tuck-in acquisitions.

US Foods’ Risks Could Limit Further Multiple Expansion

Restaurant industry traffic remains pressured, and USFD’s chain restaurant volume declined 1.5% in the second quarter. Higher operating costs also matter. Adjusted operating expenses per case increased 3.7%, with higher fuel costs and selling expenses tied to the compensation-plan transition contributing to the increase, while increased labor costs remain a stated business risk.

Competitive execution remains important as well. Sysco Corporation (SYY - Free Report) reported 2.5% U.S. Foodservice volume growth in its fiscal fourth quarter, while Performance Food Group Company (PFGC - Free Report) posted 5.8% organic independent Foodservice case growth in its fiscal fourth quarter. These results show that large foodservice distributors are still competing for volume and share, increasing the importance of USFD’s productivity gains and service execution.

USFD’s Style Scores Contrast With a Sell Signal

The bottom line is that USFD offers a strong earnings and cash-flow profile, but its premium valuation reduces the cushion against slower growth or cost pressure. The operating case can support a higher multiple, yet the risk-reward setup looks less forgiving after the recent improvement.

USFD currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Its Growth Score of A, Momentum Score of B and VGM Score of A indicate favorable growth and momentum characteristics, while its Value Score of C is more neutral. Because Style Scores are designed to complement the Zacks Rank, the current combination supports a cautious near-term stance rather than an aggressive entry despite the company’s strong growth attributes.
