Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • ADM lifts its 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to $5.50-$5.80, driven by strong biofuels margins and execution.
  • Ag Services and Oilseeds profit surges 105% to $778M on stronger soybean crushing and biodiesel margins.
  • ADM raises its 45Z incentive benefit forecast to $350M and cuts planned 2026 capital spending.

Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM - Free Report) raised its 2026 earnings outlook for the third time this year, supported by favorable North American biofuels margins and improved operating execution. Management also expressed confidence in the durability of current industry conditions heading into 2027.

The third-quarter earnings call highlighted stronger crushing profitability, expanding ethanol incentives and disciplined capital allocation. Executives also addressed concerns about margin sustainability, Nutrition headwinds and the company's longer-term growth investments.

ADM Raises Outlook on Favorable Biofuels Conditions

ADM increased its 2026 adjusted earnings guidance to $5.50-$5.80 per share from $5.15-$5.60, reflecting year-to-date performance and expectations for fourth-quarter improvement across all operating segments.

Chairman and CEO Juan Luciano attributed the improvement to the company's extensive North American processing footprint, favorable biofuels demand and operational execution.

Adjusted earnings reached $1.77 per share, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.63. Revenues of $22.34 billion fell short of the $22.67 billion consensus estimate despite increasing 9.6% year over year.

Biofuels Demand Drives ADM's Processing Margins

Ag Services and Oilseeds operating profit increased 105% to $778 million, supported by stronger soybean crushing and biodiesel margins.

CFO Monish Patolawala attributed the improvement primarily to higher domestic biofuels demand following the March finalization of Renewable Volume Obligations and elevated global energy prices. Crushing operating profit increased $298 million year over year.

During the Q&A, a BMO Capital Markets analyst questioned whether U.S. crushing margins had peaked. Luciano acknowledged exceptionally strong third-quarter margins but emphasized that soybean oil and meal demand remained robust, supporting favorable conditions into 2027.

ADM Clarifies Fourth-Quarter Earnings Drivers

Management expects constructive biofuels markets to continue through the fourth quarter, alongside stronger seasonal Ag Services activity and continued North American soybean purchases by China.

Responding to a JPMorgan analyst's questions about sequential earnings trends, Patolawala explained that seasonal weakness in ethanol and Flavors would partially offset operating strength. He also identified a nonrecurring insurance reserve benefit of approximately $40 million-$50 million in the third quarter.

The company raised its expected 2026 net benefit from 45Z clean fuel production incentives to approximately $350 million from $250 million. Management indicated that fourth-quarter benefits could moderate following the program's expansion during the third quarter.

Nutrition Recovery Remains a Focus for ADM

Nutrition operating profit increased 3% to $134 million, reflecting improved Animal Nutrition results despite continued Human Nutrition pressures.

Chief operating officer Jeff Rowe emphasized operational reliability, manufacturing modernization and automation. Human Nutrition faced unplanned plant downtime, input-cost inflation and weaker biotics demand, while Animal Nutrition benefited from earlier portfolio adjustments.

Responding to a BMO Capital Markets analyst, Luciano said Nutrition profit increased 13% excluding the prior-year insurance recovery. He expects continued growth in 2027, supported by Flavors and Animal Nutrition, while management works to restore affected production capacity.

ADM Prioritizes Capital Efficiency and New Growth Platforms

ADM lowered its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $1.2 billion-$1.3 billion from $1.3 billion-$1.5 billion. Patolawala characterized the reduction as disciplined project prioritization rather than a retreat from investment.

Management highlighted debottlenecking existing crushing and ethanol facilities, alongside investments in automation, natural colors and precision fermentation.

During the Q&A, Luciano outlined a multiyear development timeline for precision fermentation, targeting profitability within two to three years and potentially meaningful contributions within five to 10 years. Applications include alternative egg-white, whey and pet-food proteins.

ADM Maintains a Constructive but Measured Outlook

Luciano described the 2027 operating environment as broadly comparable to 2026, supported by biofuels policies and continued demand. However, he cautioned against assuming another substantial earnings increase given market volatility and nonrecurring benefits.

Management remains focused on cost reductions, asset productivity and selective investment. The company continues targeting $500 million-$750 million in aggregate savings under its enterprise-wide efficiency program.
