Key Takeaways

  • AWR's Q3 earnings of $1.06 per share miss estimates by 2.75%, as higher costs offset regulatory rate gains.
  • AWR's revenues rose 5.4% to $192.54M, driven by higher water and electric rates and increased consumption.
  • AWR's 2026 capex target is $185M-$220M and marks 72 consecutive years of annual dividend increases.

American States Water Company (AWR - Free Report) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings of $1.06 per share, unchanged year over year and missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.09 by 2.75%.

Higher operating costs, increased interest expenses and unfavorable retirement plan investment returns weighed on earnings despite benefits from regulatory rate increases.

Total Revenues

Operating revenues increased 5.4% to $192.54 million from $182.72 million, supported by higher water and electric revenues. Water consumption increased approximately 1% during the quarter.

AWR's Revenue Growth Reflects Higher Utility Rates

Water segment revenues increased 5.7% year over year to $139.92 million. The improvement primarily reflected California Public Utilities Commission-authorized second-year rate increases effective Jan. 1, 2026, additional recovery from approved capital projects and higher consumption.

These gains were partially offset by a $1.9 million decrease in billed surcharges. Changes in surcharge revenues are offset by corresponding operating expenses, resulting in no net impact on earnings.

Electric segment revenues climbed 11.6% to $14.89 million, driven by authorized fourth-year rate increases and additional recovery of costs related to completed capital projects. Contracted Services revenues increased 1.8% to $37.73 million.

Total operating expenses rose 3.5% year over year to $125.24 million. Depreciation and amortization expenses increased 10.4% to $13.17 million, reflecting additional capital investments placed into service.

Net income increased 2.7% to $42.28 million. Third-quarter results included an unfavorable earnings impact of 5 cents per share from changes in retirement plan investment returns compared with the prior-year period.
