  • BILL accelerated its AI rollout, with Risk Intelligence flagging over $100M in unusual payments for review.
  • BILL's payment volume rose 14% to $102B, while Spend & Expense net revenue grew 22% on better monetization.

BILL Holdings, Inc. (BILL - Free Report) emphasized profitable growth and faster AI development during its first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call while cautioning that sales restructuring and spending trends remain works in progress.

Management described improving payment monetization and customer quality, but its near-term outlook incorporates seasonal pressure and continuing changes to the go-to-market organization.

BILL Sets a Cautious Near-Term Outlook

Chief financial officer Rohini Jain projected second-quarter fiscal 2027 revenues of $353 million to $363 million and core revenues of $315.5 million to $325.5 million, representing core revenue growth of 10% to 13%.

For fiscal 2027, management guided to revenues of $1.4335 billion to $1.4635 billion and core revenues of $1.2835 billion to $1.3135 billion. Non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) are expected to be $3.99 to $4.15.

During Morgan Stanley's questioning about second-half acceleration, chief executive officer René Lacerte cited a difficult holiday-quarter comparison and unfinished sales changes. Jain expects product launches and fuller sales coverage to contribute as the year progresses.

BILL Holdings' Margin Gains Face Spending Normalization

Jain said core revenues increased 14% to $316.4 million, while the non-GAAP operating margin reached 38.7%, up from 21.7% a year earlier. She attributed the profitability outperformance partly to lower fraud losses and slower planned spending.

Non-GAAP earnings of $1.18 per share exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 98 cents. Reported revenues of $353.8 million were below the $438.7 million consensus figure, although BILL's new rewards accounting presentation complicates that comparison.

Asked by JPMorgan about sustainable savings, Jain said roughly half of the $22 million operating-income guidance beat came from expenses. She cautioned that hiring backfills, marketing and routine costs would increase spending after an unusually lean quarter.

BILL Accelerates Its AI-Native Product Rollout

Lacerte outlined five new capabilities, including Risk Intelligence, AI-assisted onboarding, Chat with BILL and an AI Control Hub. He positioned customer oversight and payment security as central to adoption.

Risk Intelligence flagged more than $100 million of unusual payments for review within six weeks. AI-assisted onboarding can reduce platform setup time by up to 50%, while more than 200,000 businesses have used BILL agents.

The CEO also described a Visa and Billtrust pilot built in four weeks to execute buyer-approved supplier payments through trusted agents. The pilot does not delegate payment authorization to AI.

BILL Holdings Sees Stronger Payment Monetization

Jain reported total payment volume of approximately $102 billion, up 14%, with same-store payment volume increasing 7%. Ad valorem volume growth accelerated by seven percentage points sequentially, helped by virtual cards.

Lacerte said straight-through processing and AI-based supplier routing both contributed to virtual-card gains. He also highlighted Supplier Payments Plus as a way to improve collections and reduce manual reconciliation.

Spend & Expense net revenue grew 22% despite 12% card-volume growth. Jain credited improved transaction quality and rewards adjustments while noting that card acceptance and higher-reward contracts remain areas of attention.

BILL Targets Higher-Value Customers

Jain said AP/AR core revenue grew 12%, with core average revenue per user advancing 4.1%. The business added about 3,000 net customers, near the top of its projected range.

During Autonomous Research's questioning, Jain indicated that 2,500 to 3,000 quarterly additions remained an appropriate near-term range as BILL targets businesses with 20 to 250 employees.

Lacerte said customers using both AP and Spend & Expense grew 30% year over year. He expects revised sales incentives in the third fiscal quarter to reinforce cross-selling.

BILL Holdings Balances Execution With Investment

Management's message combined confidence in restructuring gains with recognition that the commercial transition is incomplete. Jain raised the fiscal 2027 GAAP profit outlook to more than $180 million.

Lacerte described AI development, partner distribution and multiproduct adoption as priorities, while Jain expects the operating-cost base to normalize as investment resumes.

What BILL's Zacks Rank and Style Scores Indicate

BILL carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), reflecting a neutral near-term ranking rather than the stronger earnings-revision positioning associated with ranks #1 (Strong Buy) and 2 (Buy). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.

Its Growth Score of A and Value and Momentum Scores of B indicate favorable characteristics across those styles. The combined VGM Score of A reinforces that profile, although a Hold rank tempers the signal. The Zacks Rank can change as analyst estimates are revised following the quarterly results.
