Cardinal Health Sees Sustained Pharma Momentum

Alt reported 6% pharmaceutical revenue growth, supported by brand and specialty sales. Specialty expanded 18%, while GLP-1 medications contributed approximately 500 basis points to revenue growth.

However, Inflation Reduction Act-related wholesale acquisition cost reductions created a 400-basis-point revenue headwind. Pharmaceutical segment profit increased 17%, supported by generics and specialty contributions.

During Morgan Stanley's questioning, Alt highlighted strong specialty demand in oncology and urology. He also noted generic volumes exceeding long-term targets and continued benefits from Red Oak Sourcing.

CAH Strengthens Customer Contract Visibility

Chief executive officer Jason Hollar highlighted the CVS Health distribution renewal through June 2032, reinforcing an important long-term commercial relationship.

Hollar explained that contracts representing nearly two-thirds of enterprise revenues were renewed over the preceding 12 months, including major pharmaceutical and medical distribution customers.

Responding to Nephron Research, Hollar distinguished the Red Oak sourcing arrangement from the distribution renewal. He expressed confidence in continued collaboration beyond 2029 while acknowledging that renewal discussions remain necessary.

Cardinal Health Faces Medical Distribution Pressures

Global Medical Products and Distribution revenues remained approximately flat at $3.2 billion, while segment profit declined 28% to $33 million.

Alt indicated that elevated petroleum costs associated with the Iran conflict were pushing expected fiscal 2027 segment profit toward the lower end of the unchanged $200 million-$220 million guidance range.

Management continues pursuing distribution network optimization, automation and Cardinal Health Brand expansion. Alt expects second-quarter profitability to remain broadly consistent with the first quarter before sequential improvements.

CAH Expands Its Specialty and Home-Care Platforms

The Other businesses delivered 7% revenue growth and 16% profit growth. Management raised fiscal 2027 profit growth expectations to 17%-20%, reflecting stronger demand across at-Home Solutions, Nuclear and Precision Health Solutions, and OptiFreight Logistics.

Hollar discussed the integration of Strive Medical and ongoing Solaris integration, emphasizing opportunities to connect urology services across pharmaceutical distribution, physician practice support and home-based care.

During Leerink Partners' questioning, Hollar described these complementary capabilities as incremental growth opportunities rather than individually transformative drivers. Management also anticipates completing the AdaptHealth Diabetes Health acquisition during fiscal 2027's third quarter.

Cardinal Health Addresses Regulatory Uncertainty

Deutsche Bank questioned whether reimbursement changes involving 340B could shift patient volumes between care settings.

Hollar acknowledged uncertainty around the magnitude of potential shifts but maintained that Cardinal Health could participate in volume redistribution through its existing market presence.

Management also reaffirmed disciplined capital allocation, supported by expected fiscal 2027 adjusted free cash flow of $3.5 billion-$4 billion and continued investments in operational capabilities.

CAH Maintains Its Strategic Focus

Hollar emphasized strengthening pharmaceutical distribution, scaling specialty capabilities and improving medical distribution profitability while maintaining disciplined acquisition criteria.

Alt reinforced management's focus on sustainable operating improvements and financial flexibility. The updated outlook reflects confidence in continued demand alongside acknowledged medical distribution cost pressures.
