COP Targets Lower Capital Spending in 2027

Chief financial officer Kontessa Haynes-Welsh outlined preliminary expectations for modestly lower capital expenditures in 2027, alongside low-single-digit underlying production growth driven by the Lower 48.

Management expects unit operating costs to decline further as structural savings and efficiency improvements offset inflation. Full-year 2026 capital expenditure and adjusted operating cost guidance remained unchanged.

Fourth-quarter production guidance is pinned at 2.32 million to 2.36 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. Haynes-Welsh indicated that Lower 48 output should increase sequentially, while Qatar-related uncertainty remains incorporated into the outlook.

ConocoPhillips Reinforces Shareholder Return Priorities

President and chief executive officer Andrew O'Brien emphasized the company's commitment to returning 45% of cash from operations to shareholders in 2026. Third-quarter distributions totaled $3.4 billion, comprising $2.4 billion in repurchases and $1 billion in dividends.

The company increased its quarterly ordinary dividend 11% to 93 cents per share. Management expects repurchases to increase further during the fourth quarter.

Responding to a Morgan Stanley analyst, O'Brien explained that expanding operating cash flow and declining reinvestment requirements should support higher distributions. The company has averaged shareholder returns equivalent to 45% of operating cash flow over the past decade.

COP Sees Further Lower 48 Efficiency Gains

Executive vice president of Lower 48 and global HSE Nicholas Olds highlighted record Permian completion performance, with pumping hours increasing 15% compared with the 2025 average.

During questioning from Evercore ISI, Olds explained that surfactant-treated wells demonstrated a 20% improvement in oil productivity. Additional applications are planned for 2027, although deployment will remain measured.

Management also emphasized longer laterals, simultaneous fracturing and improved completion designs. These initiatives support its objective of increasing production while reducing capital intensity across its unconventional portfolio.

ConocoPhillips Keeps Willow on Schedule

Executive vice president of Global Operations and Technical Functions Kirk Johnson reaffirmed expectations for Willow's first production in early 2029.

Responding to Goldman Sachs, Johnson reported that process module fabrication exceeded 75% completion. Drilling preparations and pipeline construction remain priorities ahead of upcoming project milestones.

Management also highlighted opportunities to connect additional satellite developments to Willow infrastructure. O'Brien identified these future developments as potential contributors to capital-efficient production growth beyond 2029.

COP Expands LNG Portfolio Despite Qatar Uncertainty

O'Brien highlighted the expansion of ConocoPhillips' commercial LNG offtake portfolio to 13 million tons annually, strengthening its longer-term commercial opportunities.

During questioning from Wells Fargo, Johnson acknowledged that Qatar production remained below pre-conflict levels. Nevertheless, construction progress continues, with North Field East expected to begin operations during the first half of 2027.

Responding to Pickering Energy Partners, O'Brien identified Port Arthur Phase 1 as a key source of upcoming commercial LNG volumes. He also emphasized potential cash flow benefits from LNG market spreads exceeding the assumptions underlying the company's long-term projections.

ConocoPhillips Maintains Its Long-Term Investment Framework

Management reiterated that existing assets can support cash-flow growth beyond 2029 without requiring additional acquisitions. O'Brien highlighted the Lower 48, Alaska and international operations as foundations of that outlook.

The company expects its reinvestment rate to fall well below 50% during the 2030s. Management's emphasis remained on disciplined spending, portfolio optimization and sustainable shareholder distributions rather than expanding production at any cost.
