Key Takeaways

  • Energy Fuels advances rare earth expansion plans despite a Q3 earnings miss and uranium mining challenges.
  • UUUU's uranium segment posted a 63% gross margin, while White Mesa's rare earth expansion targets early 2028.
  • Energy Fuels plans $400M-$450M in growth capex through 2028, backed by roughly $300M in anticipated funding.

Energy Fuels Inc. (UUUU - Free Report) emphasized progress toward building an integrated rare earth supply chain during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, while acknowledging operational challenges in uranium mining and significant capital requirements.

Management highlighted the completed Australian Strategic Materials (“ASM”) acquisition, planned processing expansions and government financing initiatives as central to its growth strategy.

Revenues totaled $29.2 million, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $17 million by 71.60%.

Chief financial officer Nathan Bennett attributed the net loss primarily to $35.3 million in unrealized mark-to-market losses on marketable securities. The company also incurred $9 million in transaction and integration expenses associated with its acquisitions.

Energy Fuels' Uranium Business Maintains Profitability

Bennett highlighted the uranium segment's third consecutive profitable quarter, supported by stronger realized prices and stable operating costs.

The segment generated $28.7 million in revenues and $17.9 million in gross profit, representing a gross margin of approximately 63%. Energy Fuels sold 320,000 pounds of uranium at an average realized price of $88.90 per pound.

President and CEO Ross Bhappu acknowledged weaker-than-expected ore grades at Pinyon Plain. Management added an overnight mining crew to increase production and expects grades to improve as operations progress through the ore body.

UUUU Advances White Mesa Expansion

Bhappu confirmed approval to begin construction of the Phase 1B and 1C heavy rare earth processing expansion at White Mesa Mill.

The project includes mixed rare earth carbonate processing capabilities, intended to enable simultaneous uranium and rare earth production.

During the analyst discussion, Bhappu indicated that Phase 1B and 1C completion is expected in early 2028. Management also continues progressing engineering and permitting for the larger Phase 2 expansion.

Energy Fuels Expands Its Mine-to-Magnet Platform

The August acquisition of ASM added operating metals and alloys manufacturing capabilities in South Korea.

Bhappu said the Korean Metals Plant is expanding annual neodymium-iron-boron alloy capacity from 1,300 tonnes to 3,600 tonnes, with commissioning expected in early 2027.

The proposed acquisition of Vacuumschmelze (“VAC”), targeted for completion in early 2027, would extend operations into finished magnets. Responding to Goldman Sachs' questions, Bhappu reiterated that a disputed VAC customer contract was already reflected in transaction valuations and potential purchase price adjustments.

UUUU Faces Significant Growth Funding Requirements

Energy Fuels ended September with approximately $932 million in working capital and $1.7 billion in total assets.

Management outlined $400-$450 million in planned growth capital expenditures during 2026-2028, supported by approximately $300 million in anticipated government funding.

The Donald Project received conditional Australian government commitments covering AUD 180 million of a proposed AUD 200 million debt facility. Bhappu expects a final investment decision by year-end, with initial production targeted for late 2028.

Energy Fuels Clarifies Uranium Guidance and Timelines

Management maintained its 2026 uranium sales guidance of 1.5-2 million pounds, targeting the lower end.

Year-to-date sales reached 1.14 million pounds, while processed production totaled 1.655 million pounds, exceeding the lower end of annual processing guidance.

Responding to B. Riley Securities, Bennett confirmed that long-term contractual deliveries were essentially completed for 2026. Bhappu separately indicated that White Mesa could restart uranium processing around December, with operations potentially continuing through the first quarter of 2027 before transitioning to rare earth processing.

UUUU Maintains Focus on Execution

Bhappu emphasized that integrating upstream mining, processing, metals manufacturing and magnet production remains the company's central strategic priority.

Management's outlook balances confidence in uranium profitability and acquisition integration with caution regarding permitting, financing approvals, development schedules and capital deployment.
