Brexit Explained: What You Should Know About the UK Leaving the EU

Read MoreHide Full Article

Back in 2016, UK citizens voted 52% to 48% to leave the European Union.

This set in motion a complex unraveling of trade agreements, travel regulations, financial transactions, immigration and labor rules.

The UK had to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which gave both sides two years to agree on terms of the split.

Current Prime Minister Theresa May triggered this process on March 29, 2017.

The border issue with Ireland has also escalated. Ireland is still an EU member.

The referendum affected markets around the globe, and the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all fell into the red.

It also resulted in big political changes, including the resignation of then-Prime Minister David Cameron.

The UK is scheduled to leave the EU on March 29, 2019—deal or no deal.

Right now, Britain is awaiting a vote on May’s Brexit deal.

Many are uncertain if it will pass, as Brexit secretary Dominic Raab and several other ministers have recently resigned.
