A busy day for Microsoft (MSFT - Free Report) investors just got busier. Hours after announcing the purchase of LinkedIn , the software giant pitched its new “Project Scorpio,” an updated version of the Xbox One that promises to be the most powerful console ever.

Microsoft showed off the new console during its presentation at E3, one of the gaming industry’s biggest events of the year. The company also confirmed the Xbox One S, a slimmed-down version of the Xbox One that is 40% smaller and sports fresh coat of “robot white” paint.

The new Xbox will feature 4k visuals and virtual reality features right out of the box, with a release date pegged at holiday season 2017. Microsoft also announced that all games and accessories will be compatible on the Xbox One, Project Scorpio, and the Xbox One S.

Last year at E3, Microsoft announced a partnership with Facebook’s Oculus, a virtual reality company. While Oculus was not mentioned by name today, it appears likely that Oculus will be involved with the VR aspect of Project Scorpio.

Microsoft’s announcement came in the form of a video that features several game developers describing the strength of the console, including its true 4k resolution, 8 CPU cores, and 6 teraflops of GPU power.

We are presumably a long way out from a starting price announcement, and it’s probably safe to assume that “Project Scorpio” will not be the new console’s actual name. Either way, Microsoft has taken the next step in the console wars, and the ball is firmly in Sony’s court.

While Sony has dominated the latest generation of consoles—the latest numbers suggest that the PS4 may have doubled the Xbox One’s total sales—the Japanese tech giant has yet to take a firm stance in the world of gaming VR. This is expected to be a major focus of the Sony’s own E3 presentation.
