Read MoreHide Full Article
UTC Aerospace Systems, a division of United Technologies Corp. , recently introduced an advanced integrated drive generator (IDG) to gain a competitive edge over its peers with this cost and fuel efficient product.
The company has reportedly worked on the project for nearly 15 years and invested millions to develop the state-of-the-art product. The IDG will help power jets such as Embraer S.A.’s (ERJ - Free Report) new E190-E2 by supplying them the constant frequency electric power needed for the flight. This new power system is cost and fuel efficient. The IDG is the first all-new integrated drive generator designed in collaboration with Pratt & Whitney.
About Pratt & Whitney
Pratt & Whitney, – a unit of United Technologies – is among the world’s leading suppliers of aircraft engines to the commercial, military, business jet and general aviation markets. Pratt & Whitney’s Global Services provide maintenance, repair and overhaul services, including the sale of spare parts and fleet management services for large commercial engines.
The Collaboration
The collaboration of two of the company’s top divisions for the development of the latest IDG for aircrafts is likely to reap synergistic benefits going forward. United Technologies is likely to see a boost in its sales post the launch of the innovative IDG.
The engineers from UTC Aerospace Systems and Pratt & Whitney worked jointly to design this new power system for the E2 program to incorporate a new IDG in Pratt & Whitney engine gearbox. The UTC Aerospace Systems team developed an innovative patented axial sun differential technology to trim down IDG volume by 33% and weight by 5%, which will increase input speed range in the engine gearbox.
