The "i"s Have It -- Apple (AAPL) to Unveil iPhone 7

Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Even though the new iPhone 7 from Apple, Inc. (AAPL - Free Report) won’t be available in stores until next week at the earliest, the tech giant is using today to present its new device at its traditional September hardware event. Year to date, Apple is underperforming the S&P 500, so the company could use a splash right about now.

Because the iPhone is such an important product for the world’s largest tech firm — and Apple expects to ship about 222 million phones by the end of fiscal 2017 — an appropriately high amount of attention is paid to the device. For years, in fact, it had no equal; in recent times, however, companies like Samsung have made up a lot of the ground it had fallen behind the iPhone, thus offering a more compelling choice for consumers.

Apple means to change this, of course — but how? There are some rumors that CEO Tim Cook might unveil a new iPhone without a headphone jack, which would present another step forward in progressive smartphone use by making iPhones the first cordless such devices. That would then mean a new line of cordless headphone technology, which could amount to additional sales for the company that has a long history of just this sort of technological advancement.

A pure guess, based on nebulous speculation in the iPhone space. Elsewhere, Apple may be expected to offer new information on the Apple Watch 2, the Macbook Pro Refresh and a wider variety of colors available to iPhone customers. But if Tim Cook is looking to provide a presentation reminiscent of Apple’s late CEO Steve Jobs, he’s probably going to need to bring a bit more than just offering new iPhone colors.

Elsewhere, Hewlett-Packard Enterprises (HPE - Free Report) reports earnings after the bell today; we’re no longer in earnings season right now, but this fledgling offshoot of Hewlett-Packard (HPQ - Free Report) should offer some interesting information on how a major tech firm functions without being weighed down by so much printing equipment. Also, we expect to see the new Beige Book released a little earlier this morning, which documents economic expansion or contraction on a regional basis throughout the U.S. There is also the latest JOLTS report due out today, which posts various job openings and hirings. Both of these reads may have a near-term effect on today’s markets, where futures are down slightly in the Dow and S&P, but up a bit on the Nasdaq.
