Microsoft Extends Office 365 & Azure to UK Data Centers

Read MoreHide Full Article

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT - Free Report) is set to offer Office 365 and Azure services from its data centers in the UK.

The new offering will cover a range of sectors such as banking, legal, utility and public. It will help reduce dependence of Microsoft’s customers on European data centers.

The company is also planning to add its Dynamics CRM Online suite of cloud sales and marketing applications in the first half of 2017.

Notably, the early takers include public sector bodies such as the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Capita and Careflow Connect.

A Smart Move

The world’s second largest cloud service provider is embroiled in a legal battle with the U.S. government, which is trying to put the squeeze on it and other companies to provide access to information stored on servers located outside the U.S.

Consequently, concerns over data sovereignty in the UK have also increased. But by making MoD one of its initial cloud customers in UK, Microsoft is probably trying to assure its potential customers that their information is secure.

Our Take

We believe that the new move could boost its clouding computing business in the UK that has been hampered by regulatory and data security issues. UK is Microsoft’s second largest cloud market after the U.S.

Also, the move seems to be an effort on Microsoft’s part to gain an edge over competitors like Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL - Free Report) , Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN - Free Report) and International Business Machines Corporation (IBM - Free Report) in the cloud computing race. Last year, Amazon had revealed its plans to open data centers in the UK.
