Technology giant Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN - Free Report) just released the second generation of its Echo Dot device. It looks like the company won’t stop until it has full control of everyone’s home.
The new version of Echo Dot will utilize the same Alexa program that the earlier Echo device uses but will be sold at a significantly lower price.
Additionally, Amazon announced that Echo Dot and the original Echo will now step outside the U.S. The company plans to take the device to European countries, namely the U.K. and Germany.
Features
The Echo Dot is a scaled-down version of the Echo. The first Echo Dot was launched in Mar 2016 in the U.S.
Echo Dot is 1.6-inch-tall cylinder with one tiny speaker. It supports the Alexa platform, connects to the cloud to stream music, controls smartphone devices, and does all the same stuff as Echo. To save battery life, it only activates when tapped, and appears more durable for on-the-go use.
Shipment & Pricing
Priced at $49.99, the new generation Echo Dot is available for preorders. It will be available in two black or white colors. Amazon expects to start the shipment of the device next month.
This new model is way cheaper than the previous ones. The previous Echo Dot is available for $89.99, which means management has slashed the prices by $40, which is a huge cut.
Echo Dot’s lower price is definitely a high point as it will allow the device to reach to a broader range of customers. First, it will attract new customers, who are interested in trying out the Echo concept. Second, it should draw preexisting Echo customers, who are keen on investing in the product and want the Alexa technology in more rooms of their house.
Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos, stated, “Echo Dot is now under $50, it is easier than ever to add Echo and Alexa to any or every room in your home.”
