Amazon.com Inc.'s (AMZN - Free Report) film production division, Amazon Studios has scheduled the premier of its prime-exclusive original kids’ series Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter on Friday, Jan 27 in the U.S. and UK.

The series will be available on Prime Video via the Amazon Video app on TVs and connected devices like mobile, Fire TV and online at Amazon.com/originals, at no additional cost to prime membership.

Over the last one year, shares of Amazon have been steadily treading higher. The stock has returned 28.81% compared with the Electronic Commerce industry’s gain of 25.38%.

About the Series

Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter is based on a popular children’s fantasy book written by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. The story revolves around a 10year old girl, Ronja, who was born on a stormy night and grows up to be a strong girl. In the story, Ronja tries to explore the facts of life and discovers that love and understanding can change the impossible.

Directed by Goro Miyazaki, the animated kids’ series is presented by the Academy Award-winning Studio Ghibli and Saltkrakan, and narrated by Golden Globe Award-winning actress Gillian Anderson. It is already a hit in Japan and has won the International Emmy Award for Best Kids Animation.

Our Take

The increasing popularity of tablets, smartphones and web-connected TVs has enhanced online-video viewing and continues to attract consumers as well as leading technology companies like Alphabet (GOOGL - Free Report) and Apple Inc. (AAPL - Free Report) .

Therefore, Amazon is leaving no stone unturned to boost its digital media sales and attract new viewers, by adding varied series and movies to its content lineup and making Prime Video more attractive.

With intense competition in online video content, majors such as Netflix, Inc. (NFLX - Free Report) , Hulu and HBO, are seeing substantial success. It is natural for Amazon to compete against them with successful acts of its own. These new kids’ shows are expected to help Amazon penetrate further into the growing streaming market, at a much faster rate.
