Fiat Chrysler Recalls Over 1 Million Dodge Ram Trucks Over Software Error

Read MoreHide Full Article

On Friday, automaker giant Fiat Chrysler announced that it is recalling over 1 million Dodge Ram pickup tracks due to a software error that could prevent side air bags from deploying and seatbelts from tightening. This glitch may be linked to reports of at least one death and two injuries.

The recall includes about 1 million 2013-2016 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups and 2014-2016 Ram 3500 pickups in the United States. It also affects 216,007 vehicles in Canada, 21,668 vehicles in Mexico, and 21,530 outside the North American region, said Fiat Chrysler.

If some Ram trucks experience significant underbody impact, Fiat Chrysler said that the truck’s safety system could incorrectly determine that a sensor underneath the truck has failed. In this case, if a sensor does fail, the Ram’s safety system is designed to temporarily disable the side air bag and seat belt pretensioner when it is not supposed to, said Fiat Chrysler. If the trucks are turned off and then back on, however, those restraints will start working again.

The automaker plans to reprogram the software glitch in effected trucks free of charge. The recall is set to begin in late June.

Shares of Fiat Chrysler are up a modest 0.28% in late-morning trading today. FCAU is a #2 (Buy) on the Zacks Rank, with a VGM score of ‘A.’
