FOMC Announcement On Rates This Afternoon, Apple And Meta Earnings On Deck After The Close

Stocks closed mostly higher yesterday with the Dow leading.

Before the open yesterday, Dow component Coca-Cola posted a positive EPS surprise of 5.43%, and a positive sales surprise of 2.44%. That translated to a quarterly EPS growth rate of 11.5% vs. this time last year, and a sales growth of 6.62%. They also raised their full-year guidance with expectations for revenue to grow by 5% (up from a midpoint of 4.5% previously), and earnings to grow by 9%-10% vs. the previous outlook of 8%-9%. They were up 5.00% yesterday.

Boeing (also a Dow component), posted a negative EPS surprise of -123.5%, and a positive sales surprise of 2.11%. While top line quarterly rev grew by 8% vs. last year, the bottom line lost -76 cents per share, missing the consensus for -34 cents. But it was an improvement from last year's loss of -$1.24. Their backlog climbed to a record $715.3 billion. They were up 4.76% on the day.

After the close, Ford Motor posted a positive EPS surprise of 27.3%, and a negative sales surprise of -1.81%, which equated to a quarterly EPS growth rate of 13.5%, and a sales growth of -4.40%. They also raised their 2026 adjusted EBIT guidance to $10.5 billion midpoint (up from $9.5B midpoint), and adjusted free cash flow guidance to $6.5B midpoint (up from $5.5B midpoint). They were up 1.91% in the regular session before earnings, and jumped another 5% in after-hours trade following earnings.

Today we'll get another 331 companies on deck to report, including Magnificent 7 stocks Microsoft and Meta Platforms after the close. We'll also hear from ARM Holdings, Qualcomm, and Fortinet among others.

Tomorrow we'll hear from two more Mag 7 stocks -- Apple and Amazon.

Apple gained another 0.94% yesterday, making a new all-time high in the process, and briefly topping $5 trillion in market share. They are only the second company in history to ever hit that milestone (NVIDIA was the first). At the close, Apple was worth $4.995T, with NVIDIA in second at $4.768T.

If all goes well today and/or tomorrow, Apple will climb back above that $5T mark and keep on going.

In other news, it was reported last night that Iran launched a surprise attack on U.S. forces based in the Middle East. Centcom said all missiles were intercepted.

Looks like that brief multi-day pause in strikes between the U.S. and Iran could be over. Oil popped 4% on the news after being down -5% during the day.

Today we'll get the FOMC Announcement on interest rates. The consensus is for the Fed to keep rates unchanged with a 69.5% likelihood. But that also means a 30.5% chance of a quarter-point raise. Either way, the market will be paying close attention to the language used in the announcement, not to mention the Fed Chair Press Conference that will follow. The Announcement comes at 2:00 PM ET, with the Fed Chair Press Conference at 2:30.

Should be a busy day.

See you tomorrow,
