Determining whether a stock has the ability to offer considerable returns usually involves checking whether its earnings and valuation ratios are favorable or not. Simultaneously, it is important to determine whether its price performance exceeds its peers or the industry average.
After taking into consideration such factors, if we see that a stock is underperforming, then it would be prudent to move on and find a better alternative. However, it is important to keep in mind that those outperforming their sector should be selected because they stand a better chance to provide considerable returns.
At the same time, it is imperative that you determine whether or not a stock has relevant upside potential when considering stocks with significant relative price strength. Identifying stocks delivering better performance than the S&P 500 over a period of 1 to 3 months at the least and having fundamentals indicating that it has room to move higher is the best way to go about this.
Finally, it is crucial that we determine whether such an approach has achieved its goals. In order to do this, we have added positive estimate revisions for the current quarter’s (Q1) earnings to our screen. When a stock undergoes an upward revision, it means that an analyst is more favorably disposed toward the stock. Such a revision leads to additional price gains.
