Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM - Free Report) , the largest manufacturer of wireless chipset based on baseband technology, has lined up its latest flagship smartphone System on Chip (SoC) – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 – to power next-generation smartphones. The company hopes to deliver better performance with this chipset compared to its predecessor, Snapdragon 820. However, Qualcomm claims that Snapdragon 821 will not replace the Snapdragon 820 but will complement and extend the competitive strengths of its Snapdragon 800 line-up.

Being a leading name in the baseband chipset space, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are used in Apple Inc.’s (AAPL - Free Report) iPhone, Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL - Free Report) -developed Android smartphones and Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT - Free Report) Windows-based handsets.

Predecessor 820

Qualcomm launched its Snapdragon 820 Chipset at the beginning of this year, featuring Kryo quad-core CPU,  speeds of up to 2.2GHz , Power Cluster of 1.6 Ghz and GPU clocks of Adreno 530 624 MHz. This 820 processor ruled the mobile industry with over 115 premium smartphone and tablet device deployments, generating more immersive user experiences and introducing multiple new technologies, all tightly integrated and power optimized. Several smartphone models which are powered by the Snapdragon 820 are Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, Xiaomi Mi5, LG G5, HTC 10, LeEco LeMax 2, and Sony Xperia X.

The Latest Technology

Qualcomm’s latest mobile processor, Snapdragon 821, internally known by its model designation MSM8996 Pro, features a quad-core Kryo CPU with speed of 2.4 GHz, thus delivering a promised 10% performance improvement over the 820. Moreover, the power cluster will be above 2 GHz and GPU clocks look to be around 650 MHz. Inspite of the fact that the 821 processor has been manufactured on the technology platform of 820, the 821 is engineered to deliver faster speed, improved power savings and greater application performance. The 821 powered devices will keep pace with the growing performance demands of users to deliver the unmatched user experiences the Snapdragon 800 tier is known for and will be available in the market by the second half of 2016.

The Bottom Line

However interesting and refreshing be the new chipset be, it will assign a new bar for smart phones, tablets, mobile VR head mounted displays and other new devices. The latest mobile processor, Sanpdragon 821 will be sold alongside the two Snapdragon 820 models.

Although Qualcomm is yet to disclose which phones will use 821, rumors suggest that HTC's upcoming Nexus phone and the ASUS ZenFone 3 will include the faster chip.

Qualcomm currently has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
