Shares of Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) gained as much as 1% in early morning trading Thursday after the company announced plans to create 100,000 full-time jobs in the United States over the next 18 months.

“These new job opportunities are for people all across the country and with all types of experience, education and skill levels—from engineers and software developers to those seeking entry-level positions and on-the-job training,” the company said in a press release.

Over the past five years, Amazon has created over 150,000 jobs in the U.S. The company’s domestic workforce has grown from 30,000 employees to over 180,000 over that time. With its network of fulfillment centers spread throughout the country, Amazon has brought new jobs to seven different states.

“These jobs are not just in our Seattle headquarters or in Silicon Valley—they’re in our customer service network, fulfillment centers and other facilities in local communities throughout the country,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Amazon pledged that its new jobs plan includes all full-time, full-benefit jobs. The ecommerce giant offers “egalitarian” benefits, meaning that many of its employee offerings are the same for customer service employees as they are for Amazon’s senior executives.

The company also said that it hopes to continue its veteran hiring program by adding an additional 25,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years.

Today’s announcement underscores Amazon’s bold expansion hopes. With the success of Amazon Prime comes a demand for new fulfillment centers and an even larger presence in the retail landscape.
