Is Franklin U.S. Mid Cap Multifactor Index ETF (FLQM) a Strong ETF Right Now?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Designed to provide broad exposure to the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend category of the market, the Franklin U.S. Mid Cap Multifactor Index ETF (FLQM - Free Report) is a smart beta exchange traded fund launched on 04/26/2017.

What Are Smart Beta ETFs?

Products that are based on market cap weighted indexes, which are strategies designed to reflect a specific market segment or the market as a whole, have traditionally dominated the ETF industry.

A good option for investors who believe in market efficiency, market cap weighted indexes offer a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way of replicating market returns.

However, some investors believe in the possibility of beating the market through exceptional stock selection, and choose a different type of fund that tracks non-cap weighted strategies: smart beta.

These indexes attempt to select stocks that have better chances of risk-return performance, based on certain fundamental characteristics or a combination of such characteristics.

Even though this space provides many choices to investors--think one of the simplest methodologies like equal-weighting and more complicated ones like fundamental and volatility/momentum based weighting--not all have been able to deliver first-rate results.

Fund Sponsor & Index

FLQM is managed by Franklin Templeton Investments, and this fund has amassed over $1.67 billion, which makes it one of the average sized ETFs in the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend. FLQM seeks to match the performance of the LibertyQ U.S. Mid Cap Equity Index before fees and expenses.

The LibertyQ U.S. Mid Cap Equity Index includes U.S. mid-capitalization companies that have favorable exposure to four investment style factors - quality, value, momentum and low volatility.

Cost & Other Expenses

Expense ratios are an important factor in the return of an ETF and in the long-term, cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive cousins, other things remaining the same.

Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.30%, making it on par with most peer products in the space.

It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 1.39%.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

Even though ETFs offer diversified exposure which minimizes single stock risk, it is still important to look into a fund's holdings before investing. Luckily, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

Representing 19.9% of the portfolio, the fund has heaviest allocation to the Industrials sector; Consumer Discretionary and Financials round out the top three.

Looking at individual holdings, Ferguson Enterprises Inc (FERG) accounts for about 1.18% of total assets, followed by Synchrony Financial (SYF) and Tractor Supply Company (TSCO).

The top 10 holdings account for about 10.63% of total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

The ETF has added about 2.36% and is up roughly 5.39% so far this year and in the past one year (as of 07/23/2025), respectively. FLQM has traded between $46.92 and $58.81 during this last 52-week period.

The ETF has a beta of 0.97 and standard deviation of 16.48% for the trailing three-year period. With about 208 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk .

Alternatives

Franklin U.S. Mid Cap Multifactor Index ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend segment of the market. However, there are other ETFs in the space which investors could consider.

Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF (VO) tracks CRSP US Mid Cap Index and the iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF (IJH) tracks S&P MidCap 400 Index. Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF has $85.39 billion in assets, iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF has $98.03 billion. VO has an expense ratio of 0.04% and IJH changes 0.05%.

Investors looking for cheaper and lower-risk options should consider traditional market cap weighted ETFs that aim to match the returns of the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend
