Is First Trust Energy AlphaDEX ETF (FXN) a Strong ETF Right Now?

Read MoreHide Full Article

The First Trust Energy AlphaDEX ETF (FXN - Free Report) was launched on 05/08/2007, and is a smart beta exchange traded fund designed to offer broad exposure to the Energy ETFs category of the market.

What Are Smart Beta ETFs?

Market cap weighted indexes were created to reflect the market, or a specific segment of the market, and the ETF industry has traditionally been dominated by products based on this strategy.

A good option for investors who believe in market efficiency, market cap weighted indexes offer a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way of replicating market returns.

On the other hand, some investors who believe that it is possible to beat the market by superior stock selection opt to invest in another class of funds that track non-cap weighted strategies--popularly known as smart beta.

This kind of index follows this same mindset, as it attempts to pick stocks that have better chances of risk-return performance; non-cap weighted strategies base selection on certain fundamental characteristics, or a mix of such characteristics.

While this space offers a number of choices to investors, including simplest equal-weighting, fundamental weighting and volatility/momentum based weighting methodologies, not all these strategies have been able to deliver superior results.

Fund Sponsor & Index

FXN is managed by First Trust Advisors, and this fund has amassed over $1.24 billion, which makes it one of the larger ETFs in the Energy ETFs. This particular fund, before fees and expenses, seeks to match the performance of the StrataQuant Energy Index.

The StrataQuant Energy Index is a modified equal-dollar weighted index designed by the AMEX to objectively identify and select stocks from the Russell 1000 Index that may generate positive alpha relative to traditional passive style indices through the use of the AlphaDEX screening methodology.

Cost & Other Expenses

For ETF investors, expense ratios are an important factor when considering a fund's return; in the long-term, cheaper funds actually have the ability to outperform their more expensive cousins if all other things remain the same.

Annual operating expenses for FXN are 0.63%, which makes it on par with most peer products in the space.

FXN's 12-month trailing dividend yield is 1.83%.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

It is important to delve into an ETF's holdings before investing despite the many upsides to these kinds of funds like diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

FXN's heaviest allocation is in the Energy sector, which is about 92.3% of the portfolio.

Taking into account individual holdings, Ovintiv Inc. (OVV) accounts for about 4.92% of the fund's total assets, followed by Matador Resources Company (MTDR) and Apa Corporation (APA).

The top 10 holdings account for about 44.96% of total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

The ETF return is roughly 31.05% so far this year and was up about 49.13% in the last one year (as of 06/01/2026). In the past 52-week period, it has traded between $14.64 and $23.18

FXN has a beta of 0.56 and standard deviation of 25.07% for the trailing three-year period, which makes the fund a high risk choice in the space. With about 38 holdings, it has more concentrated exposure than peers .

Alternatives

First Trust Energy AlphaDEX ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the Energy ETFs segment of the market. However, there are other ETFs in the space which investors could consider.

Vanguard Energy Index Fund ETF Shares (VDE) tracks MSCI US Investable Market Energy 25/50 Index and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) tracks Energy Select Sector Index. Vanguard Energy Index Fund ETF Shares has $9.75 billion in assets, State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF has $38.72 billion. VDE has an expense ratio of 0.09% and XLE changes 0.08%.

Investors looking for cheaper and lower-risk options should consider traditional market cap weighted ETFs that aim to match the returns of the Energy ETFs
