Read MoreHide Full Article

Pre-market futures are down a bit to start a new trading week, following a decent rebound on Friday is what was otherwise a challenging week for investors. The Dow is -52 points at this hour, the S&P 500 is -14, the Nasdaq -176 and the small-cap Russell 2000 is -4 points presently.

Spot oil prices are keeping steady at elevated levels — $85 per barrel (/bbl) on WTI, $93/bbl on Brent crude — while bond yields are behaving pretty much the same: +4.715% on the 10-year and +4.244% on the 2-year. As Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent openly muses about doubling liquidity on long-term bonds, the 30-year yield is hovering around 20-year highs: +5.243%.

All Eyes on Wednesday: NVIDIA Reports Earnings, PCE Releases

We’re in a quiet period on the trading calendar, with Q2 earnings trickling to a close and Jobs Week still a week away. Yet NVIDIA ((NVDA - Free Report) — Ground Zero among AI stocks — reports Q2 earnings Wednesday after the closing bell. The Zacks Rank #3 (Hold)-rated stock is expected to continue its enormous growth narrative: +99% on earnings and +96.5% on revenues. Shares are basically flat year to date, +22.7% from this time last year. We’ll pay close attention to its Data Center growth as well as Gross Margins overall.

Meanwhile, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) also hit the tape Wednesday, but before the opening bell. This will include the first revision on Q2 GDP, which disappointed somewhat at +1.5% in its first print. The year-over-year index — touted be former Fed Chair Jerome Powell as his preferred inflation metric — is expected to reduce slightly to a still-warm +3.6% on headline and remain at +3.3% on core. Any surprise to the downside on these numbers would likely be met with positive sentiment among traders.

Jackson Hole Symposium Closes the Week

Throughout the trading week, we’ll see new Housing data — Case-Shiller home prices for June and New Home Sales for July — Durable Goods, an updated Trade Balance, Jobless Claims and reports on Chicago Business and University of Michigan consumer sentiment. For earnings, we’ll also hear from Salesforce ((CRM - Free Report) , Marvell Technologies ((MRVL - Free Report) and “buy now/pay later” platform Affirm Holdings ((AFRM - Free Report) .

Thursday begins the annual three-day economic symposium at Jackson Hole, hosted as always by the Kansas City Fed. This year’s theme is “Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy,” and will likely tackle themes like cryptocurrency. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh will give the keynote address, the first in his tenure. We’ll see if he plays it close to the vest, as he does when discussing monetary policy.
