How Trossen Robotics Collaboration Could Strengthen Ouster's Prospects

Ouster, Inc. (OUST - Free Report) , through its wholly owned subsidiary Stereolabs SAS, maker of the ZED series of AI stereo cameras, is collaborating with Trossen Robotics, a provider of research and data-collection platforms for Physical AI. The partnership integrates Stereolabs’ ZED X Mini and ZED X Nano cameras into Trossen’s new Physical AI hardware suite for robot learning. This includes the Trossen Workbench and Rivet, the company’s stationary and mobile bimanual manipulation platforms.

The quality of Physical AI models depends heavily on the demonstration data used for training, much of which is visual. However, development teams often build custom setups using separately sourced robotic arms and consumer-grade USB cameras, along with proprietary driver software. Such configurations can produce datasets affected by low-resolution images, inconsistent calibration, motion blur and timing discrepancies between cameras and other data streams.

The Trossen Workbench and Rivet are integrated development platforms equipped with dual WidowX Pro 6-DoF arms. The systems offer 700 mm to 1,000 mm of reach, payload capacities of 4-6 kilograms and 1 mm repeatability. Both platforms use NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin 64 GB computing hardware and support teleoperation through local networks as well as the internet. They also feature factory-calibrated, three-camera vision systems built entirely with Stereolabs technology.

The joint Stereolabs-Trossen vision setup is designed to replicate the way advanced robotic manipulation models are trained. A centrally mounted Stereolabs ZED X Mini provides a broad view of the workspace along with stereo-depth information, while wrist-mounted ZED X Nano cameras capture close-up views of the grippers and objects. These detailed wrist-level perspectives are important for imitation-learning models performing precise manipulation tasks.

The ZED X Nano is specifically optimized for such applications. Its dual 2.3-megapixel (1920×1200) global-shutter sensors can capture footage at up to 60 frames per second while minimizing the motion blur commonly associated with rolling-shutter USB cameras. Its neural depth engine can resolve geometry from distances as close as 3 centimeters, covering the range where actual grasping takes place. 

GMSL2 connectivity, combined with locking and EMI-resistant cables, enables deterministic synchronization of all three cameras with the Jetson through a zero-copy pipeline. This allows teams to simultaneously record, encode and run inference without silently losing frames during data-collection sessions. An onboard vibration-resistant IMU further helps maintain reliable wrist-level vision while the robotic arms operate at speed.

As a result, each teleoperated session captured on the Workbench and Rivet produces a synchronized, multi-view RGB-plus-depth training sample. The data can be used for imitation learning, reinforcement learning and sim-to-real workflows, with native support for ROS 2 and NVIDIA Isaac Sim/Isaac Lab.

Broader Industry Moves in AI Imaging and Edge Computing

Sony Semiconductor Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation (SONY - Free Report) , plans a strategic partnership with TSMC to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors for robotics, automotive systems and physical AI. It will hold a controlling stake in the proposed joint venture, combining Sony’s sensor expertise with TSMC’s manufacturing capabilities.
