Read MoreHide Full Article

Community banks continue to operate in an environment influenced by changing interest rates, competition for loans and deposits and evolving customer demand for financial services. Against this backdrop, Ohio Valley Banc Corp. (OVBC - Free Report) and LCNB Corp. (LCNB - Free Report) are two Ohio-based financial holding companies primarily engaged in community banking. OVBC operates mainly through The Ohio Valley Bank Company, providing commercial and retail banking services across southeastern Ohio and western West Virginia. LCNB operates primarily through LCNB National Bank, offering a range of commercial and consumer banking products and services across Southwestern and South-Central Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

While both companies are focused on community banking, their differing geographic footprints and business exposure create distinct investment profiles. Both serve individuals and businesses through traditional lending and deposit services while competing within their respective regional markets. This raises the question: which company is better positioned to create long-term shareholder value? Let's take a closer look.

Factors Driving Ohio Valley Banc Stock

OVBC’s expanding earning-asset base remains an important positive, with commercial and residential real estate lending continuing to underpin growth. Higher loan balances have supported net interest income even as funding costs remain elevated. The increasing contribution from higher-yielding loans also improves the earnings potential of the asset mix, giving Ohio Valley Banc a stronger base for sustaining core interest revenues.

OVBC has shown better operating efficiency, reflecting a healthier relationship between revenues and expenses. Lower data-processing costs provided some support, while the company continues to invest in software aimed at improving internal processes. Although salary, benefit and certain regulatory costs remain elevated, greater efficiency can help absorb these pressures and improve the scalability of earnings as the balance sheet expands.

Ohio Valley Banc continues to support shareholders through dividends and its ongoing share-repurchase program. At the same time, the bank maintains capital above applicable regulatory requirements, giving management flexibility to return capital without compromising financial strength. The extension of the buyback program reinforces this balanced approach to capital allocation and shareholder returns.

Factors Aiding LCNB Stock

LCNB’s funding optimization strategy is improving the profitability of its core banking operations. The deliberate runoff of higher-cost certificates and IRA balances has reduced interest expense, while improved loan yields have supported asset returns. Together, these trends are widening the spread between earning-asset yields and funding costs, strengthening net interest income and providing a healthier foundation for recurring profitability.

LCNB Wealth Management continues to develop into an important source of fee-based revenues. New customer accounts and appreciation in managed assets have supported fiduciary income, while additional talent in the Cincinnati market is expected to enhance the platform’s ability to attract and serve clients. This business also reduces reliance on traditional spread income and deepens relationships with customers across multiple financial services.

LCNB has earned back the tangible book value dilution associated with its Cincinnati Federal acquisition, demonstrating progress in generating value from the transaction. Higher retained earnings and improved valuation of the investment portfolio have also strengthened tangible equity. This healthier capital base supports financial flexibility and the continuation of regular shareholder distributions.

Choose LCNB Over OVBC Now

Both Ohio Valley Banc and LCNB have fundamental positives supporting their investment cases. OVBC is benefiting from loan-led earning-asset growth, improving operating efficiency and continued capital returns. Its expanding commercial and residential real estate portfolio is supporting core revenues, while expense discipline and shareholder distributions add further support.

LCNB, however, appears to offer a more balanced operating profile. Its funding optimization strategy is lowering deposit costs and supporting margin expansion, while Wealth Management provides a growing fee-based revenue stream outside traditional banking. The recovery in tangible book value following the Cincinnati Federal acquisition also indicates that the benefits of prior investments are increasingly flowing through to shareholders.

From a valuation standpoint, LCNB appears relatively more attractive. OVBC trades substantially above its own historical valuation despite its recent share-price underperformance, suggesting that investors are already assigning a meaningful premium to its growth prospects. This leaves less room for execution setbacks. LCNB also trades above its historical norm, but its valuation is closer to past levels and remains below Ohio Valley Banc’s, implying more moderate expectations and a comparatively better risk-reward setup.

LCNB therefore appears to be the better buy right now, supported by improving core profitability, a differentiated Wealth Management franchise, strengthening tangible book value and a more reasonable valuation relative to its own history.
