Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Lumen unveils Intelligent Internet to give businesses more flexible bandwidth and connectivity.
  • Intelligent Internet lets customers adjust bandwidth digitally while maintaining more predictable costs.
  • The service includes DDoS Essentials and Lumen Defender, with bandwidth scalable to 100 Gbps.

Lumen Technologies (LUMN - Free Report) is taking a different approach to enterprise Internet connectivity with the launch of Lumen Intelligent Internet, a service designed to give businesses more flexibility over bandwidth, connectivity costs and network capacity. The offering arrives as AI, cloud computing and data-intensive applications make enterprise bandwidth requirements increasingly difficult to predict.

According to IDC research cited by Lumen, 37% of enterprises experienced bandwidth requirements increasing by more than 50% year over year, while 29% reported difficulties aligning their networks with AI workloads. AI workloads can involve large-scale data transfers between applications, cloud platforms, data centers and users. As businesses deploy generative AI, machine learning, analytics and other data-intensive applications, network infrastructure becomes an important part of the overall technology architecture.

Conventional connectivity models are typically built around fixed capacity. Businesses often provision enough bandwidth to meet expected peak demand, even though that capacity may sit underutilized for much of the year. Intelligent Internet is designed to address this mismatch. A key aspect of Lumen's offering is the ability to adjust bandwidth to match demand. Customers can provision and modify connectivity digitally through Lumen Connect or APIs. This can reduce the operational friction traditionally associated with changing enterprise network capacity. The service also introduces term-based pricing, allowing customers to maintain more predictable monthly costs while retaining the flexibility to adjust bandwidth when necessary.

It incorporates enterprise network controls along with security services. DDoS Essentials protects against large-scale distributed denial-of-service attacks, while Lumen Defender blocks known threats. The service is currently available to enterprise customers at more than 10 million U.S. business locations, with bandwidth scalable to 100 Gbps, according to Lumen.

Can LUMN Stand Out in a Crowded Connectivity Market?

Cogent Communications (CCOI - Free Report) is benefiting from rising net-centric traffic, expanding wavelength adoption and a mix that is shifting toward more profitable on-net services. Cogent’s Tier 1 network gives customers broad access to traffic-rich locations and supports dedicated Internet services with local provisioning. Management also noted that roughly 90% of Cogent's routes are unique and that the IP network was only about 27% utilized, leaving capacity available for future traffic growth. The Sprint acquisition expanded Cogent’s owned-fiber footprint and created a larger optical transport opportunity. In the second quarter of 2026, wavelength revenue rose 63.8% year over year to $14.8 million.

AT&T (T - Free Report) continues to invest in fiber and fixed wireless to expand advanced Internet reach and deepen household convergence with wireless. In August, it introduced AT&T Video Intelligence with EdgeVis Cloud, a managed cloud deployment option that expands its existing IoT Video Intelligence platform. The offering combines optimized video streaming, secure transmission, analytics and alerting with an AT&T-managed cloud backend. It is designed to simplify deployment and reduce infrastructure requirements for enterprise, mid-market, large SMB and public-sector customers. Potential applications include construction sites, transportation corridors, utility operations, logistics yards, retail locations, smart-city pilots and emergency response sites.
