NL Upgraded to Outperform on CompX Strength, Kronos Recovery
Read MoreHide Full Article
NLI Holdings, Inc. (NL - Free Report) has been upgraded to “Outperform” from “Neutral,” supported by improving operating trends at its majority-owned subsidiary — CompX International Inc. (CIX - Free Report) — as well as better performance at Kronos Worldwide.
The upgrade reflects positive year-over-year guidance, broad-based strength within CompX’s Security Products business, improving gross margin and better operational execution at Kronos following its cost restructuring. These factors point to stronger earnings quality and operating momentum despite continued exposure to TiO2 pricing, currency movements and input-cost pressures.
NLI Holdings is primarily a holding company and conducts its component-products operations through CompX, which manufactures Security Products and Marine Components. Therefore, CompX’s sales, gross margin and operating profitability are consolidated into NL’s results, making improvements in the subsidiary an important driver of NLI Holdings’ earnings performance. NL also owns an approximately 31% non-controlling interest in Kronos, results of which are accounted for under the equity method.
Positive 2026 Guidance Supports the Upgrade
The outlook for 2026 has become increasingly constructive. CompX expects 2026 net sales to exceed the 2025 reported level, excluding the impacts of a prior-year one-time customer stocking event. More importantly, management expects the full-year gross margin and segment-profit margin to surpass the 2025 reported levels, suggesting that revenue growth should translate into stronger profitability rather than simply higher volumes.
The positive outlook also extends to Kronos. Management expects its 2026 sales to exceed 2025 levels, with both gross and operating margins improving. The combination of better demand, pricing actions and structural cost reductions provides another earnings lever for NL, which holds an approximately 31% interest in Kronos.
Security Products Strength Broadens Growth Base
CompX’s Security Products business is benefiting from strength across several end markets rather than relying on a single demand driver. Second-quarter 2026 sales increased 9% year over year, aided by higher sales of $0.9 million to healthcare customers, $0.7 million to transportation customers, $0.5 million through distributors and $0.4 million to the tool-storage market. Management expects healthcare, transportation and tool-storage demand to remain strong during the second half of 2026.
This broad-based demand improves the visibility of CompX’s growth trajectory. Security Products reporting-unit profit increased 39% year over year to $8 million in the second quarter, while its profit margin expanded to 24% from 19%.
Margin expansion is another key factor behind the upgrade. CompX’s second-quarter 2026 gross margin increased to $15.5 million from $12.9 million in the prior-year quarter, while the gross margin as a percentage of sales expanded to 36% from 32%. Segment profit climbed 41% to $8.9 million, with segmental profit margin rising to 20% from 16%.
Security Products was the primary contributor to the improvement, benefiting from a more favorable customer and product mix, lower employer-related medical expenses, and a one-time recovery of prior-period import costs. Importantly, higher sales also provided better coverage of operating expenses.
Kronos Restructuring Is Translating Into Better Execution
Kronos’ operational restructuring is also yielding tangible benefits. Cost-reduction initiatives implemented in the fourth quarter of 2025, including workforce reductions and other measures, were designed to permanently lower the cost structure and allow facilities to operate more efficiently at lower production rates. These actions, together with lower feedstock costs and reduced unabsorbed fixed costs, helped improve profitability in 2026.
The improvement was particularly visible in the second quarter of 2026. Kronos’ operating income increased to $37.6 million from $7.4 million in the prior-year quarter, while its gross margin improved to 18% from 13%. Unabsorbed fixed costs were immaterial compared with roughly $20 million in the prior-year quarter, demonstrating the benefit of the revised operating structure even as TiO2 pricing remained below the year-ago reported levels.
Overall, the combination of stronger 2026 guidance, diversified Security Products demand, expanding CompX margins and a structurally leaner Kronos operation strengthens NL’s earnings outlook and supports the upgrade to “Outperform”. Tariff and raw-material inflation could pressure CompX margins, while TiO2 pricing and currency fluctuations remain risks at Kronos, but current operating trends provide a more favorable earnings setup than in 2025.
