Read MoreHide Full Article

Launched on 06/16/2017, the Pacer US Small Cap Cash Cows ETF (CALF - Free Report) is a smart beta exchange traded fund offering broad exposure to the Style Box - Small Cap Value category of the market.

What Are Smart Beta ETFs?

Products that are based on market cap weighted indexes, which are strategies designed to reflect a specific market segment or the market as a whole, have traditionally dominated the ETF industry.

Market cap weighted indexes offer a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way of replicating market returns, and are a good option for investors who believe in market efficiency.

On the other hand, some investors who believe that it is possible to beat the market by superior stock selection opt to invest in another class of funds that track non-cap weighted strategies--popularly known as smart beta.

Non-cap weighted indexes try to choose stocks that have a better chance of risk-return performance, which is based on specific fundamental characteristics, or a mix of other such characteristics.

Methodologies like equal-weighting, one of the simplest options out there, fundamental weighting, and volatility/momentum based weighting are all choices offered to investors in this space, but not all of them can deliver superior returns.

Fund Sponsor & Index

The fund is managed by Pacer Etfs. CALF has been able to amass assets over $3.59 billion, making it one of the larger ETFs in the Style Box - Small Cap Value. This particular fund, before fees and expenses, seeks to match the performance of the Pacer US Small Cap Cash Cows Index.

The Pacer US Small Cap Cash Cows Index uses an objective, rules-based methodology to provide exposure to small-capitalization U.S. companies with high free cash flow yields.

Cost & Other Expenses

For ETF investors, expense ratios are an important factor when considering a fund's return; in the long-term, cheaper funds actually have the ability to outperform their more expensive cousins if all other things remain the same.

Annual operating expenses for CALF are 0.59%, which makes it one of the more expensive products in the space.

It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 1.17%.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

While ETFs offer diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk, a deep look into a fund's holdings is a valuable exercise. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

For CALF, it has heaviest allocation in the Consumer Discretionary sector --about 21.5% of the portfolio --while Information Technology and Energy round out the top three.

Taking into account individual holdings, Tenet Healthcare Corp (THC) accounts for about 2.69% of the fund's total assets, followed by Expedia Group Inc (EXPE) and Anglogold Ashanti Plc (AU).

Its top 10 holdings account for approximately 20.75% of CALF's total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

Year-to-date, the Pacer US Small Cap Cash Cows ETF has added about 23.88% so far, and was up about 28.21% over the last 12 months (as of 10/12/2026). CALF has traded between $41.96 $57.92 in this past 52-week period.

The fund has a beta of 1.03 and standard deviation of 20.23% for the trailing three-year period. With about 200 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk .

Alternatives

Pacer US Small Cap Cash Cows ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the Style Box - Small Cap Value segment of the market. However, there are other ETFs in the space which investors could consider.

iShares Russell 2000 Value ETF (IWN) tracks Russell 2000 Value Index and the Vanguard Morningstar Small-Cap Value ETF (VBR) tracks CRSP U.S. Small Cap Value Index. iShares Russell 2000 Value ETF has $13.84 billion in assets, Vanguard Morningstar Small-Cap Value ETF has $35.68 billion.
