Key Takeaways

  • The RealReal's Q2 2026 GMV surged 22% to $617M, while revenues grew 17% and adjusted EBITDA doubled.
  • REAL raised its 2026 outlook as higher-value transactions, growing buyer activity and AI tools support growth.
  • REAL's take rate fell 200 basis points to 35.9%, while debt and a 10.96X forward PEG raise valuation concerns.

The RealReal, Inc. (REAL - Free Report) is showing a sharper operating trajectory, with marketplace growth, higher-value transactions and improving profitability supporting a stronger 2026 outlook. The question is whether that progress is enough to justify a stock that remains expensive on a growth-adjusted basis.

The answer is not straightforward. REAL has credible operating momentum, but take-rate pressure, leverage and a demanding valuation leave limited room for execution missteps.

Second-quarter 2026 gross merchandise value reached a record $617 million, up 22% year over year, while revenues rose 17% to about $193 million. Orders increased 8% and average order value climbed 13% to $659, showing that growth came from both higher transaction activity and stronger customer spending. Trailing 12-month active buyers increased 11% to about 1.1 million.

Supply trends are reinforcing that demand. Supply per sales representative rose 15% in the first six months of 2026, while 44% of new consignors in the second quarter came from the active buyer base. Adjusted EBITDA doubled to $13.5 million, and the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 290 basis points to 7%. Management raised its 2026 outlook to GMV of $2.535-$2.565 billion, revenues of $788-$797 million and adjusted EBITDA of $66-$69 million.

Automation could support further operating leverage. REAL expects its AI-enabled Athena intake system to process nearly 50% of items fully through the system by the end of 2026. The company is also expanding AI-powered shopping and pricing tools to improve product discovery and processing efficiency.

The growth mix carries a trade-off. Sales of items priced above $1,000 increased 36% in the first half of 2026, but those transactions carry lower percentage take rates. REAL's second-quarter take rate fell 200 basis points to 35.9%, and consignment revenue growth of 15% trailed GMV growth.

Leverage is another constraint. As of June 30, 2026, REAL carried about $231.5 million of convertible senior notes and $144.3 million of non-convertible notes compared with $119.1 million of cash and cash equivalents. The company later secured a $150 million senior secured term loan and a $25 million revolving facility to redeem its 2029 senior secured notes. The refinancing addresses a maturity but does not remove balance-sheet risk.

Valuation also demands caution. REAL trades at 10.96X forward 12-month PEG compared with 1.91X for the Zacks sub-industry, 1.17X for the Zacks sector and 1.39X for the S&P 500. Its three-year median is 5.46X, leaving a sizable premium despite the acceleration in growth.

Competition remains relevant. eBay Inc. (EBAY - Free Report) continues to expand its recommerce and authenticated luxury offerings, including broader Authenticity Guarantee coverage. ThredUp Inc. (TDUP - Free Report) , another large online resale platform, reported 17% second-quarter 2026 revenue growth and 21% active-buyer growth. Both underscore the opportunity in resale, but also the competition for buyers and supply.

REAL's operating progress supports a more constructive view, but the stock is not a clean value case. Growth, improving margins and automation offer upside, while take-rate compression, debt and a premium PEG multiple keep the risk-reward balanced.

The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), along with a Growth Score of A, VGM Score of B, Momentum Score of C and Value Score of D. That combination favors investors focused on near-term earnings-revision strength and growth characteristics, while the weak Value Score reinforces the valuation concern. REAL may appeal more to growth-oriented investors comfortable with volatility than to value-focused buyers seeking a wider margin of safety.
