  • CRWV offers higher potential gains but faces funding risks, while MSFT provides stable earnings.

The AI boom is reshaping cloud computing, creating opportunities for both specialized AI infrastructure providers and established technology giants. Two companies at the focus of this transformation are CoreWeave, Inc. (CRWV - Free Report) and Microsoft Corporation (MSFT - Free Report) .

Per a report from Fortune Business Insights, the global cloud AI market size is anticipated to go from $133.4 billion in 2026 to $780.6 billion by 2034 at a CAGR of 23.8%. CoreWeave offers specialized cloud infrastructure built around high-performance GPUs, while Microsoft combines its Azure cloud platform with enterprise software, AI models and products such as Microsoft 365 Copilot. Both companies are poised to benefit from growing AI workloads, but their investment cases differ considerably.

The key question for investors is which stock offers greater upside potential from its current valuation. CoreWeave could deliver stronger percentage gains if AI infrastructure demand and profitability exceed expectations. Microsoft, however, offers a more diversified business, established cash generation and broader opportunities to monetize AI.

Let’s find out below.

The Case for MSFT Stock

Microsoft delivered a strong first quarter of fiscal 2027, with revenue up 19% year over year to $92.3 billion, operating income up 21% to $45.9 billion, Azure revenue rising 48% and Microsoft Cloud revenue growing 30% to $63.9 billion. Accelerating Microsoft Cloud growth, robust Azure demand and expanding commercial commitments highlight the company's ability to capitalize on rising enterprise investment in AI and cloud infrastructure. Its diversified revenue streams provide a financial cushion that a specialized infrastructure provider does not have.

The company introduced major Copilot updates, integrating Chat, Cowork, Autopilot and Code into a unified experience, while new AI models and agentic development tools are expanding applications in coding, security and enterprise automation. Microsoft is also strengthening AI governance, data management and contextual intelligence through tools such as Microsoft Purview, Fabric and Microsoft IQ. Commercial remaining performance obligation (RPO) increased 73%, representing a robust pipeline of contracted future business.

Cloud infrastructure remains a key growth driver, backed by strong AI demand, Foundry adoption and infrastructure efficiencies. Microsoft added 24 data centers globally and is optimizing capacity to improve throughput and costs. Enterprise AI adoption continues to broaden across industries, including healthcare, financial services and supply chains, while Dynamics 365 and LinkedIn are also benefiting from AI integration.

For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Microsoft expects revenue of $96-$97.1 billion, with Azure growth projected at 49-50%. Capital expenditures are expected to exceed $50 billion as the company expands AI infrastructure to address demand that continues to outpace supply. Despite heavy investments, Microsoft is prioritizing infrastructure efficiency, cost management and strong operating margins to improve returns. It returned $10.2 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases during the fiscal first quarter.

However, declining Windows OEM and Devices revenue, modest weakness in Xbox content and services, and the lumpsum investment requirements associated with AI infrastructure remain important factors for investors to monitor. Microsoft also faces challenges in its consumer segment, with Windows OEM revenue declining 22% amid inventory and PC demand pressures, although Bing, Edge and Xbox reported positive engagement trends.

The Case for CRWV Stock

CoreWeave continues to expand its AI cloud platform, adding 500 MW of active power capacity in the second quarter to reach 1.5 GW, with contracted power increasing to 4.2 GW. The company is expanding into Asia-Pacific and targeting more than 8 GW of active power capacity by 2030. It recently expanded its global AI cloud platform, bringing most of its planned 22.5 MW of IT capacity online at a Copenhagen data center while extending its network into the Middle East and Asia Pacific. The expansion could strengthen its competitive position amid rising global AI demand.

Platform innovations across training, inference and managed services are broadening its capabilities, with managed inference ARR growing from $1 million to more than $100 million since launch. Management expects this business to reach at least $250 million in ARR by year-end. Strong customer demand, premium pricing and supply-chain efficiencies are supporting margin expansion despite intensifying competition. CoreWeave is also capitalizing on legacy GPU infrastructure through renewals and shorter-duration contracts, while expanding its managed inference offerings. Its focus on reliability, security and flexible infrastructure helps differentiate its platform across a growing range of AI workloads.

CoreWeave strengthened its financial flexibility through debt and equity financing, raising more than $18 billion and reducing its average debt cost by 300 basis points. For 2026, management raised its capital expenditure outlook to $35-$39 billion and expects revenue of $12.4-$13.2 billion, adjusted operating income of up to $1.15 billion and exit ARR of $18.5-$19.5 billion. Although heavy investment and financing requirements remain key risks, the company expects sustained AI demand and capacity expansion to drive future growth.

However, CoreWeave faces risks from heavy capital spending, rising financing costs and customer concentration. Rising infrastructure investments pushed capital expenditures to $9.4 billion in the second quarter, with full-year guidance raised to $35-$39 billion, increasing reliance on debt, equity and other funding sources. Customer concentration remains another concern, as three customers accounted for 72% of second-quarter revenue, while two customers each represented 32% of accounts receivable. Although CoreWeave is expanding into new industries and lowering borrowing costs, its substantial funding needs and dependence on a few major customers remain key risks.

CRWV or MSFT: Which Stock Offers More Upside?

Both CRWV and MSFT at present carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

CRWV is the more aggressive bet on AI infrastructure. Its rapid revenue growth and large backlog could drive significant share-price appreciation if it executes successfully, improves operating profitability and manages its debt burden. However, financing requirements, execution delays and the risk of shareholder dilution make it a higher-risk investment. MSFT offers a broader way to participate in AI adoption. Azure's strong growth, enterprise software ecosystem and profitability provide multiple avenues for monetization. Its substantial capital spending remains a risk, but its diversified operations offer greater resilience.

CRWV may offer greater percentage upside for risk-tolerant, long-term investors if growth translates into sustainable cash flow, while MSFT is better suited to investors seeking stable earnings, diversification and lower risk.
